Creating Goals for Yourself is Easier Than You Think!

Dougie Lloyd
We create goals for ourselves to give us something to work for. Goals help give us direction that will eventually lead us to where we want to be. It's the same concept as planning a cross-country trip. You will map out the course that you want to take, planning for stops along the way. Creating goals for your life works the same way.

Before you begin, make sure that you have the necessary tools. For this you will only need a pencil and paper. Start by making two columns: one for long-term goals and one for short-term goals. In the long-term goal column you should list your larger goals, such as gaining financial independence, buying a new home, etc. In your short-term goal column, you should list smaller goals that are related to the larger goals. For example, if your long-term goal was financial independence, your smaller goals could include graduating college, landing a great job, and saving a certain amount of money. By elaborating further on your long-term goals, you are completing them a little more with each short-term goal that you accomplish.

When you are deciding on what goals to write down, you need to make sure that these goals can be reached. You know what your abilities are and what you are capable of. Keep this in mind when creating your list.

Another technique to use for goal setting involves a weekly goal list. This list is primarily used for more short-term goals that you need to accomplish, such as saving money or holiday shopping. It is still a very effective way to manage your goals.

You should also keep in mind that whatever outlook you have will dictate how you set your goals. If you have more of a positive outlook, your goals will have a more positive construct. If you have more of a negative, ho-hum outlook, your goals will be bland and have nor real meaning. With positive thinking, you will find that your goals are more defined.

If you are a more detailed person, you can take a 10 year plan for goal achievement and break it down into smaller increments. This can actually help you reach your goals faster. It can also provide you with periods that you can examine your goals, and make adjustments as needed. There will be many times that you will need to do this, with the most common being when you complete a major goal. If you have broken down your time frame into smaller groups, you may find that once you hit one period, the future goals that you have set may not work for you anymore.
