Creating a Green Lawn Using No Chemicals

It is possible to have a thick, green lawn without the use of chemicals. When I was young, I remember my grandfather had the most beautiful lawn in his neighborhood, all without using any chemicals. I will admit, your neighbors may not like some of the smells, but they do go away. On the other hand if you have an annoying partying neighbor who keeps you up all night, then do not worry so much. The aroma of the applications is temporary and is not strong enough to be bothersome.

The first thing my grandfather would do is, buy his favorite grass seed, which was Kentucky Blue. He would place the bag into the freezer for a day or two prior to spreading it on the lawn. He would then cut his lawn to the lowest about one inch. Then he would DE-thatch his lawn, this is done in the early spring. You can do this the old fashion way with a hand rake, or rent a DE-thatcher from a tool rental place. When your done, place the dead grass into your yard waste bag for recycling. After DE-thatching, he would take the grass seed he purchased out of the freezer and generously spread it onto his front lawn. Now at this point, I seen some people like to use straw to cover the seed to protect them from being eaten by birds. My grandfather would pour a bag a simple mixture of manure and dirt into his wheel barrel and spread it generously across his lawn. After this step, he hooked up his sprinkler and watered the lawn. The manure mixture he told me helps keep water in soil for the seeds. Watering your lawn each day is important at this point.

When you start to see grass filling in nicely, let it grow until it the grass begins to seed itself. This is where the grass blades get fine at the top and looks sort of like small wheat. After the the lawn seeded again, cut your grass but the key here is long. Never short in summer, but short before winter my grandfather told me.

Now for the bug control. This may sound funny, but it works. Take your plastic sprayer which attaches to your hose and squirt in regular dish soap. Spray evenly over your entire grass. This application really works. In a nut shell, they bugs will die from being sick. Kind of like what happens to humans if they eat or drink from a soapy glass or dishes.

To green up your lawn. Here take your sprayer, this time your going to add beer. Yes, beer. I would go to store and buy the cheapest beer by the case I could find. Place the beer into your plastic sprayer, attach it to your hose and spray generously over your lawn. Repeat as the beer will run out fast. This application surprisingly does green up the grass, plus it also rids the bugs from your lawn too. Beer works great for beetles in your garden. Place beer in a tin saucer and place in your garden. Basically they get drunk and disappear.

To aerate his lawn, my grandfather did it the old fashioned way, with golf shoes. The holes are not as deep as a rented aerator, or if a lawn company does it, but it did work for him. Plus, it saved him the cost being on a fixed income being a senior citizen. There is also the option of buying a aerator that you step on and the plugs of grass pour out top as you move along. This one is very time consuming.

My grandfather never used anything other then applications above and plenty of watering. Myself, I used along with these applications, Milorganite. Some call it Milwaukee sewer sludge, not sure why, but it greens and feeds the grass wonderfully as well. In the fall, my grandfather would also add more seed from the freezer. This seed came up at springtime. This is the time for the last cut ,here cut your grass short. The grass goes dormant for the cold winter and comes back in the spring. My grandfather never had many dandelions in his lawn, but the ones he did have, he just yanked out with a garden tool. I followed his teachings to me, and I had a wonderfully plush lawn like he did. You can choose them all, or try just one. The important issue is, no harmful chemicals were used that could harm animals. No worries if your dog, or neighbors dog eats your grass. It takes work, but you will enjoy a healthy green lawn. Good Luck.
