Homeschooled children should not be deprived of anything that private and public school kids experience. All schools have mascots, and your's should also. While choosing a mascot, do some research and make choosing a mascot into a science experiment.
What does a mascot say about a school? The type of animal that the school chooses indicates the type of team that they are. For example, a team with a snake as a mascot would indicate that the team is sneaky like a snake. Or, if the team had a fox for a mascot you would assume the team was sly like a fox or clever like a fox. Another team might choose the lion, because the lion is king of his domain.
Have your child label a notebook with the title, "Possible Mascots". Each page should list a different animal. Under each animal name will be the specific characteristics about the animal. Hve your child write whether the animal is gentle in nature or ferocious like a beast. Does the animal protect it's family or does it travel alone? Have your child write as many facts as he or she can find about the animal in the notebook. Have him or her research at least ten different animals that they want to learn more about.
Now on a separate sheet of paper list your child's characteristics. Have him or her add them to the list. Compare your child's characteristics to the characteristics that they have discovered about the animals. Are there any similarities? The chosen mascot should be personal to the student and represent the school. As this is a homeschool, this is a mascot choice and a personal one.
Once your child makes the decision, then you need to create the mascot. If your child already has a stuffed animal that is the same as the mascot, then that is great. If not, you may want to puchase one. For example, if you have purchased a teddy bear because your child is known for giving great hugs, then make a shirt with a teddy bear and your school name on it. All you need is a little white shirt and a colorful marker. Give the teddy bear a cap. Write the school name on the cap. The reason for the mascot is to show school spirit and to reflect a characteristic about the child. Whenever your child sees the mascot, he or she can be proud of the school, even if the school that he or she attends is at home.
