Which is the same as the recommendation that you want to create multiple streams of income. You will need to create a domain name and procure hosting. Whether you decide to use a free domain from a subdomain provider like Lycos, 000webhost, or AOL's Homestead, or you decide to go with any one of the plethora of webhosting companies to be found on the net building and encoding your website is going to present various challenges which will be unique to whatever host you choose. Most starter site providers do choose to provide a website builder which allows you to build your site in a user friendly self encoding GUI(graphical user interface)
First you have to decide on a theme or central topic for your site. Not all of your affiliate links have to pertain to the topic of the site but it is usually best if the majority of them do. If you're stuck for a topic or category that is rich with affiliate opportunities then it is time to go searching. Select something that interests you and that you know has a niche. There are very few niches which have not had someone or several someones explore the possibilities for that venue. You may have come up with a new way to look at the product or services that are associated with your topic or a different way to combine the theme and collateral links that creates an "AHA!" moment for as large a segment of the internet community as possible.
You are going to need content, and you're going to need a lot of content for your website no matter what your site is about. Periodically you will have to juggle your content around and update your webpage to include new information, updates, and of course new programs and products for your site to keep the site interesting and fresh. Make your site as user friendly and as navigable as possible. Do not load your page down with too many multimedia features or videos, you don't want your homepage to take too long to load. On the other hand you can neither fill your homepage with nothing but affiliate links or nothing but tightly spaced uniform text. It is best to maintain a common theme or typeset for your page, but you want to break the text up with links and advertisements. Links, bulleted lists, changes in text color or size, these will all serve to break up the uniformity of your page. Also try to strike a balance between providing too little information to be accepted as an authority or an informed source of information about your topic, and providing way too much information and tiring or boring your visitors.
Once you have built your page, no matter what host or builder you have used you will want to test your site to insure that it appears the way that you want it to in multiple browsers. The most popular free ware internet browsers currently in use online are:
- Internet Explorer (Windows)
- Firefox(Firefox)
- Slimbrowser (Flashpeak)
- Opera Browser (opera.com)
- Flock Browser(Flock)
There are of course numerous other browsers that are commonly used on the internet. Preference is strictly up to the user but if your site appears properly in these five browsers it will most likely work in most internet browsers with little difficulty. You will also want to get the opinions of others on how your site looks, and on navigating your site. If you are a member of a social network or if you have a few friends who are internet connected, get them to stop by your new site and give you some feedback on your site. Take their feedback, make the changes that you feel are best and you are now ready to go.
Once your page is built and ready for visitors you will have to experiment with various free and paid advertising and promotional methods to drive traffic to your website. Traffic is the lifeblood of e-commerce and there are a lot of different ways to get people to view your site. There is pay-per-view search engine marketing. You can use surf rotator sites, or paid to click incentivized sites where the users are given credit for viewing sites and thus are motivated to click links and visit sites. There is link sharing and link dumping. There are so many different ways to market a website to build traffic that I am going to leave this topic for another article. Have fun, remember the reason that you wanted to build your site was not only to make money but to connect with other like minded people and to share knowledge. Social networking is another way to share knowledge and find like minded people as well as being a good tool for sending hits to your site. Think outside the box and be creative with your marketing campaigns and you will normally see success in direct proportion to your promotional efforts.
Build relationships both with your advertisers and your website visitors. Get feedback and suggestions from both whenever possible. Build a list of subscribers or members and ensure that you have an email marketing campaign which keeps you and your site in the minds of your users/visitors. Try to think of the people that the site is intended for and what kinds of things that they want, what they think, what is important to them and what they need. Then you have find a way, a program, or a product which answers the needs that you have pinpointed as in your venue. Always try to stay ahead of your site users and provide what they need before they realize that they need it.
For example if your site is about camping you would provide articles, advice, and links to things related to camping. As you mention the things that a camper may need and the alternative products that may appeal to these intrepid outdoorsmen place your affiliate links in line with your text or in columns next to your text. If you have links for tents, camp stoves, and coleman lanterns make sure that you find alternatives to these products and other related products that would be used or considered at the same time like citronella candles, battery powered bug lites, or pest repellants. Provide links to suppliers of the products that your target audience is going to need or is at least going to consider for the pastime or topic that your site is about. Don't forget outdoor outfitters, clothing suppliers, recreational companies that make awnings, RV products, and any product from rudimentary to ultra sophisticated that your users may need to pursue your shared interest. People like being able to go to one place that has links for everything they need.
Another great way of keeping your content fresh and interesting is to offer users space to post their photos or stories about their pursuit of your subject. User driven content is what sites like MySpace, Facebook, and even Ebay are based upon. They don't create all of the content but they provide a venue for users to interact for a commission or a fee. Those sites that provide profile space and photo submission features are much more visited and referred by users than those that are not interactive with their visitors, that is just a fact. You may not have the space to provide a service such as MySpace but regardless of how much of your content is user driven you will have to cull this material and ensure that spammers and opportunists are not using your site to steal your visitors away from your site to their affiliate links.
An internet business is just like a brick and mortar business, except for the brick and mortar. A business requires a lot from it's owner to become successful. Even if you choose to market a prebuilt affiliate turnkey website you can still produce your own website and include your affiliate site links and testimonials. Whatever you're marketing, whatever relationships you build online, and no matter how big or small you're planning to start the effort that you put into marketing and connecting with your website users the more successful you will be. You will learn the things that you need to learn about site building and marketing as you go along. The more that you do it the better at it you will get and the more relationships you will build online. A treasure trove of signups for an affiliate program or down line building program are the users of your website or blog who trust you as an authority on your subject matter, especially those who have followed your advice or your referrals for products or services and have had success with that service, membership, or opportunity.
