Picking out your fabrics, is probably the easiest of the steps. I am sure there is something you cannot wear anymore, lying around or tucked in the bottom drawer somewhere. These can come in very useful in this project. There is something to say for not throwing out somethings, huh? Maybe you are one of those people who has to have things coincide with each other, for instance, you really like a scent that is pine, you start looking for a fabric that will express the pine scent. Maybe you will use fabric that looks like wood, or pine needles. Maybe you will find a plaid, that favors colors associated with pine trees. This is okay, and will help you keep the different scents, coordinated.
If you really like strawberry scents, and you have a patterned fabric with strawberries, then use it, there. It is quite left up to your own imaginations. You can attached dried out flowers around the ends, or maybe you can attached ribbons, or tassels to the end of the sachet as well. Again imagination is a good tool in this.
Now when you go to picking out scents, where can you find them? Any dried flower petals, or any commercial potpourri can work. Just make sure it is dry and not still fresh. I would suggest getting your scent in commercial bags of potpourri, there is so many varieties to pick from now a days, and it is so convenient.
When you go to putting the sachet to form, you have several choices.
~You can use fusible web. It comes in rolls or strips, and when heat is applied it bonds fabric to fabric in seconds. You can purchase it at a fabric store, or some merchants carry it also. Be sure though to follow the directions.
~Another way is to have a fringe rather than to hem the fabric's edges. You will need a pin to remove the threads of the fabric, one at a tome.
Some ideas of how to change the appearance of a fabric, is to dye it. This sounds harder than it is. You will simply soak a piece of fabric, or even a doily into a cup of tea, until the color transfers to the desired look. Rinsing the fabric, in cold water. Dry it and then press it with an iron. This creates a antique look. Any color would do, but I found white or opal colors work best.
To roll a sachet, you would need-
~12" by 13" fabric
~1/2 yard. 3/4" fusible web(heavy duty)
~2 rubber bands
~ties, or ribbons, about one yard.
~embellishments, like baby pine cones, or dried blossoms, or berries(dried) or fake
~glue gun and glue sticks
How to roll it-
~gather around 3 inches from the end and secure with rubber band
~fill the roll, up to 3 inches from the opening with your potpourri
~Tie the ends with your ribbon or ties, and knot the ends.
~hot glue the embellishments, or things you have chosen to the roll.
For a Victorian sachet, use a rectangular vintage doily, and fill with a little fabric, cuttings. Weave ribbons , to gather the rolls ends then attach charms. Create the sachet with a decorated face. Maybe dried petals, or pearls, or maybe beads.
Hopefully you will soon get the hang of it, and will be out there making these for weddings, or anniversaries, or maybe that student that is going away to college. You can accent these with memorable fragrances, or just ordinary scents. It is a good gift, and it makes a home smell great. Also putting one in your vehicle will make it smell great.
Happy crafting.
