Creating Your Own Natural Household Cleaners

Gwendolyn Taylor
Looking for ways to clean and tidy up your house, but without the toxins and the awful smells? Here are some ideas on natural ingredients that are just as effective as synthetic cleansers and tips on creating your very own "green" household cleaners.

These are some common ingredients that can be used to clean up areas in the house. Baking soda can be used to clean, deodorize, scour, and soften water. Unscented soap in any form (liquid, bar, powders, etc.) can be used clean almost anything. Another plus is that soap is biodegradable. Lemon is very strong and effective against most household bacteria. White Vinegar can be used to cut grease, remove mildew, eliminate odors, and get rid of stains and wax build up. Isopropyl alcohol can be used as disinfectant. Cornstarch can be used to clean windows, as a shampoo for carpets and rugs, and as a furniture polisher. Remember to use these ingredients in moderation and to keep them away from pets and children.

Here is a way to make a substitute, natural All-Purpose Cleaner. Combine half a cup of vinegar and 1/4 cup of baking soda with half a gallon of water. Store the solution in a recycled container and apply the solution towards the removal of water deposit stains on shower stalls and tiles, cleaning bathroom chrome fixtures, wiping glass windows, and clearing bathroom mirrors.

Here is a way to make a substitute, natural Toilet Bowl Cleaner. Mix 1/4 cup of baking soda and one cup if vinegar and pour the solution into toilet bowl and let it stand for a few minutes. Scrub the bowl with a toilet brush and flush.

Here is a way to make a substitute, natural Bathtub Cleaner. For regular, everyday cleaning, scrub the tub with some baking soda using a damp sponge and then rinse out the tub with water. For tougher, dirtier jobs, apply some vinegar first on the surface of the tub and follow up with baking soda as a scouring source. Be careful since vinegar solution can break down tile grout, so use everything in moderation.

Want something that is quick, convenient, and effective? Mass merchandise stores are selling natural household cleaners as well. Brands include Nature's Source and Green Works. These are comprised of t least 99% naturally derived ingredients and the great thing about these is that retail for the same or even less than other name brand synthetic household cleaners.
