How to Create Your Meditation Space

Ann-Marie Walker
Enhance your meditation time by creating your own special space. Designating a specific area for meditation is very beneficial. It allows you to have a sacred area that is relaxing, free from loud noises, and a place where you will not be disturbed. After continued use of your specific area, it will be charged with positive relaxing energy. It will create an atmosphere that will help induce relaxation and allow you to enter your meditative state quicker. Your body mind and soul will be conditioned to know, when you enter your special meditation space, it is time to relax and meditate.

Choosing an Area

When deciding where to create your special meditation space, pick a place where you will be undisturbed. If you have a spare room that is a wonderful choice. Not everyone has that luxury. If your short on space, pick an area of a room that you already use. A corner of a bedroom or family room can be used. If your using a high traffic area you might want to section it off with a tall screen, so no one can disturb it.

Clean and Free of Clutter

Your area should be clean and free of clutter. Clutter can promote negativity by not allowing energy to flow freely. Make sure you meditation space is free of clutter and sparkling clean. This will help produce an area that will promote positive energy.

Seating Arrangement

You can choose to place a stool, tall back chair, or cushions in your meditation space. Make sure that you will be comfortable with what ever option you choose. Sitting in a chair that creates tension in your body will not allow you to relax completely. Likewise, if your sitting on the floor with cushions and no back support, you might experience strain on your back. You know your body better than anyone. Choose a seating arrangement that will allow you to be comfortable, and relax without any tension in your body.

Small Table or Tray

You can place a small table or tray in your meditation space. This will allow a place for you to add other elements to your area.

Candles

Candles can be beneficial tool. Some people use them as a focal point while meditating. I personally like to light a white candle to represent the white light of love, light, healing, and protection. How you choose to use your own candle is up to you. Adapt it to your specific needs. It is not a necessary element in your meditation space. If you prefer not to place a candle in your sacred space, that is completely acceptable.

Lighting

Lighting in your meditation space should be not be too bright. It should be soft and warm. An intense bright light can interfere with concentration and make it difficult to relax.

Colors

If your painting the walls in your meditation room, be sure to use a relaxing soft color. Do not use colors that are bright and intense. Soft blues and lavenders are great color choices.

Incense

You may add an incense stick to your area. The scent or fragrance of lavender is known to be very relaxing. Aromatherapy can be used in conjunction with meditation to heighten awareness, psychic abilities, or prophetic dreams or visions. Choose your incense according to your intended use.

Crystals

Many people choose to place a crystal in their meditation space. There are many types of crystals that can be used to enhance different experiences. Choose a crystal according to your specific needs.

An Alter or Group of Objects

You may also choose to place an alter or a group of specific objects in your sacred space. These items can be used for focal points during meditation. They can also be a group of items that remind you of peace and love. Your items can be changed off routinely according to your needs.

Music

If you choose to add music to your meditation area, it should be soft and subtle. You do not want any music that is loud or that will cause a distraction. It is easy to find a great selection of music to choose from. Your local department store or even book store offers many titles specifically for meditation. You may enjoy sounds of nature, sounds of the ocean, or music specifically made to induce relaxation and complement meditation.

Getting the Most out of Your New Meditation Space

Music, candles, incense, objects, crystals, and colors are all wonderful ways to enhance your meditation space. You want to keep your area clean and free of clutter to promote the best meditation experience. If your committed and use your new meditation space on a consistent basis, you will reap the maximum benefits. Meditating in your new space around the same time each day will also enhance your experience. When you enter your designated space, your body, mind and soul will soon recognize that it is time to begin its journey into deep relaxation.
