Creating Your Own Sacred Space to Meditate: Denomination Neutral Sacred Spaces for Awakening Souls

V. Sanders,
From churches made of stone to outdoor reflecting and meditation pools the concept of sacred space permeates religion and spirituality regardless of denominational roots. What is that makes the idea of a sacred space so alluring, so necessary? What are the benefits to us as people, as spirits that makes the construction of sacred space seemingly a necessity to our own survival?

In ancient cultures, and even in some no distant, when a place was settled no one questioned that the first thing to be built would be a temple or a church. The idea of a sacred place of worship, meditation and gathering superseded the individual's need for clothing or shelter. In these times, it is easier to forget about our spiritual bodies because we have become more adapted to being concerned over the condition of our physical bodies, but the care for our souls and nourishment of our spirit is no less important for our overall health than it was in the distant past.

Scientific studies have proven that stress is a major contributor to both cancer and heart disease and is recognized widely as the overall greatest contributor to early death. Compare that with the findings that have made so much press that those with a strong spiritual belief and practice far out live those with no faith and those who meditate regularly can even increase their life spans by several years!

The question is what if you do not adhere to fundamental religious ideas or have no belief in a particular dogma? How then, can you take advantage of the benefits of sacred space and allow your spirit the room and nourishment it requires to grow and find it's own path to the light? The creation of a non religious sacred space can be amazingly simple, and requires no belief in anything other than the existence of the spirit. a simple water garden, or reflecting pool can serve as a centerpiece for a wonderful and moving sacred space. Of course, not everyone can afford a massive water feature and in that case even a small tabletop fountain is enough to get the spiritual energy flowing!

The most important things to keep in mind when creating your own sacred area in your home, or outdoors is that the area that you choose should be appealing to you, comfortable, peaceful and most of all should be constructed and decorated in a way that speaks to your soul. When painting and decorating seek out colors that speak of serenity and calm. Fill your room with items that simply make you feel spiritual to view , touch and be around. Make certain that the area is as far away as possible from any disturbing noises such as barking dogs, ringing phones and noisy kids.

Keep the room well supplied with incense , candles and of course you'll need a lovely incense burner. You need not worry though, a sacred space doesn't have to be elaborate or expensive to be perfect. Sometimes, a small garden corner can be a spiritually moving as a great cathedral. Add a few things that speak to your own spiritual nature, and make sure that you have a focal point and comfortable seating. A supply of relaxing music, according to your own taste and inexpensive CD player or rain machine will help you to create a perfect space for your spiritual peace.
