Creating a Personalized Birthday Sock

Julie Boehlke
Are you looking for a new and different idea to make your child's or loved ones next birthday more fun? A birthday sock offers a way to personalize the day in a unique way.

Children love waking up Christmas morning and grabbing their stocking to see what goodies Santa has left them inside. The stocking has been a long running tradition, dating back decades as being an icon in Holiday history.

Like Christmas, for most people, celebrating a birthday is also a very special and memorable time in a child's life. As each year passes, finding something more unique and personable as they grow older, becomes harder. Designing a special birthday sock or stocking filled with small toys and treats offers an additional way your child can open gifts before presents.

A personalized birthday sock doesn't have to be just for children. Creating a birthday sock for adults in your family eliminates wrapping large, bulky presents. A sock allows you and others to give gifts and small items in a new and unique way.

Here are a few ideas for creating your own birthday sock.

Types-

You can purchase or use any kind of sock, but longer ones, such as sports socks work best. This allows you to fit more goodies inside. Socks don't always come in extravagant colors and designs. Long sports socks tend to be in the colors of just white or black and may have stripes on the top. Avoid ankle and mid-calve sized sock designs.

Designing-

Add embellishments such as colorful craft gems, ribbons, glitter and buttons. Use glitter glue to personalize the sock with her name or personal birthday quotes. Use a hot glue gun or some fabric glue to rearrange and adhere embellishments -- creating a one-of-a kind look. Craft stores offer a huge array of designer gems, beads and iron-on transfers that you can use to make the sock special.

Birthday Sock Contents-

Smaller items, such as toys or accessories related to other gifts can be used as stocking stuffers. Video games, MP3 players, high-tech gadgets and fashion jewelry that is too small to wrap are also good items to add. Game cards and gift certificates for his favorite online games can easily fit into a stocking. Favorite candies such as taffy, suckers, chocolates and chewing gum can be added for an extra special treat.

You can choose to hand deliver the sock personally or hang it from a mantle or shelf for presentation.

The key is to have fun with the design, contents and presentation. Kids love surprises and they love being able to open up more than just one thing on their birthday. Remember that adults also like feeling special and in some cases, enjoy feeling like a kid again on their birthday. Implementing a birthday sock to your child's or loved ones special day can become a tradition years to come.
