Creating a Sailboat Themed Room

Heather Wood
If you look outside today, most likely it is cold, damp or snowy. What better way to bring the warm breezes of summer into your child's bedroom than to turn it into a sailboat themed room. Before you begin, you should plan ahead by setting a budget and figuring out how much time you have to pull it all together to create the sailboat themed room.

The first thing you will want to consider is the color of your walls. Paint is an easy and inexpensive way to provide the base for your sailboat themed room. Yellows, navies, other shades of blues, the classics colors of red, white, and sands work well as base room colors. If you would rather wall paper the wall, shop around and look for wall paper with fine pinstripes or perhaps a border with anchors. It is best not to get anything too showy for your walls because as you add accessories, they will get lost amongst the wall paper. That is why paint is most likely your best bet.

Your bed covering could be sail boat themed (many big box stores will carry such bedding), but if you want a bit of a twist and you are handy with a needle and thread, why not purchase actual sail material and fashion it into a quilt? Or even a denim bed covering will work quite nicely in this instance. You can even use sail material for curtains (or go to your local fabric store and again look for material with a fine stripe - perhaps navy or red even.) You could also visit the local marina for the flags that sailors use to warn other sailors of impending weather for a valance for the window. Another option is for you to crochet a fishing net type of covering for the bed and windows.

Now comes the fun part! Accessorizing the room. Spend some time visiting antique shops, marinas, thrift stores, lake or seaside shops for special touches that will make the room truly your child's own. You can purchase items such as an antique oar or two, a life preserver, a boat model (either all ready put together or made by your son), lighthouses, and other such items both to hang on the wall and use as table top accessories can be used.

There are a few ideas that you both can make together to accessorize the sailboat themed room too. If you are lucky enough to live near the ocean or beach, collect some shells (if not, don't despair, you can purchase bags of shells and sea glass at large craft stores). You can purchase a shadow box (some dollar stores even carry them). Use a weather flag, the same material as your curtains or a scrap of denim for your back drop and arrange the shells into the box and either glue them to the back or not. Be sure to use a good variety of shapes and colors. You will want to be careful with shells if you are decorating for a very young child's room as these could be a choking hazard. You can also glue shells and sea glass to the lampshade of the bedside lamp or stencil the shape of an anchor or star fish onto the lampshade. There are many ideas that can be utilized for such a theme as this.

With a little imagination, time, and some fun thrown into the mix, you and your child can create a wonderful sailboat themed room that your child will be able to grow with and enjoy for years to come.
