Creating the Scariest House for Halloween Without High Spending

Matthew Shively
One thing I have always enjoyed was a haunted house during Halloween. Even though I know they are fake and made up for the whole idea of fright on Halloween I still get startled. Why not do the same at home and make your house the scariest on the block?

Every single year I always have people taking pictures of my yard and kids scared to come up to the house for the candy without mom or dad, but isn't that what Halloween is all about? You can easily create a haunted yard or garage that doesn't cost you a lot of money and with little effort. All you have to have is a great imagination and some ideas to bring in the haunting of Halloween.

I have found over the years that slowly adding to your collection of Halloween goodies and holding on to them can create one heck of a haunted yard or garage. In addition, the best place in my opinion to purchase anything for Halloween is Wal-Mart. Don't waste your money online or going to novelty stores where you will spend an arm and a leg just for a couple items. Go to the Halloween section at Wal-Mart and let your imagination go wild with spooky ideas. I only spend on average every year about $20.00 to $30.00 and in a few years you have one of the spookiest houses on the block that people will remember for some time. However, the key to buying spooky items for your house are the days that follow Halloween when everything begins to go on sale at Wal-Mart. You can spend $20.00 to $30.00 after Halloween and have everything you need for one heck of a haunted yard or garage the following year. So what does it take to have the scariest house on the block?

One thing that every haunted house has is strobe lights, moving objects, aluminum foil, and black tarp or trash bags. With these few affordable things you are already on your way to fear. Let me provide some great ideas for going forth in creating fright on Halloween. The first thing you need is an idea. Once you get an idea based on the structure of your yard you can start setting things up and just go with the flow. During the day it may not look like much, but at night when the strobes are going and a little smoke billowing from behind and hovering the ground you have spook in action.

Let's begin with the yard scene. Go to Wal-Mart or a flower shop and purchase a couple bags of the cheapest dirt you can find. This will come in handy when you start a grave that has bones sticking out. Create the grave first and work everything else around the grave. Poor the dirt on the ground and create a mound so it looks like a fresh grave. Take some cheap bones that you purchased from Wal-Mart and begin placing them in the grave. You can even just put a hand sticking out of the dirt. Be careful though, you don't want to overdue it with the bones. You want to try and keep it scary and as realistic as possible. In addition, it is nearing wintertime so flower gardens are most likely dieing so put the grave in a flowerbed so you can re-use the soil for future purposes in your flower garden.

Next you need to set up the head stones in your cemetery and maybe even place a small wicked fence around the cemetery so it looks realistic. You can purchase cheap headstones at Wal-Mart. Buy a mixture of sizes so it doesn't all look the same and you don't need but 3 to 6 headstones. Once again don't overdue it with the headstones. I will even let the weeds start growing a little bit in my flowerbed before Halloween so I can place the headstones around the weeds to make it look old and haunted. Make sure you add a strobe to the cemetery so it hits the whole cemetery for that spooky effect. Also, you can even add some fake blood here and there for that scary effect and a sign that is spooky that names your cemetery. The ideas can a long way. Like I said get a plan and then just go with the flow. Add some spooky thinned out cobweb around the cemetery and even add what looks like a dead person lying in the dirt with a shovel near by. Like I said earlier, use your imagination.

Throughout the rest of the yard add some spooky bones around the yard and maybe even a fake dead animal or two to add to the effect. But we cannot forget the smoke and house behind the cemetery. You can go and purchase a smoke machine, which can be costly, or go to your nearest grocery store and buy some dry ice and bottled water. Take the dry ice and break it apart and place chunks around the yard and in the cemetery (NOTE: Make sure you are wearing thick gloves while playing with dry ice as it will burn your skin). The dew from the night and a little water will create that spooky fog look right in your own yard. You can even get some empty 2-liter bottles, put some dry ice in them and add just a little water and place them around the yard where you won't see the bottle and it will safely put out the fog in smaller amounts.

Now the house behind the cemetery needs to look spooky as well or the whole scene won't work right. Remember that with a hose and some water your house can be cleaned. Take some spare dirt and just have fun and throw it on the house making it look dirty and old. Add some scary hanging objects around and maybe even some window and door clings that make your house just that much scarier. I know it is tradition to have a porch light on for tricker treaters, but all lights out and in darkness will just add to the spookiness. Stand outside waiting for the kiddos or utilize a black light for a porch light with some cobwebs around the door and windows. Do what you can to make your house part of a scary movie setting.

What about the garage? Utilize it; of course if it is clean enough to walk in, if it isn't just make a good size walk way. Everything will be covered with black tarp, black trash bags, or black painting plastic. Once you have a walkway, place the black material from the ceiling to the floor and make sure it gets narrower toward the back where there is a chair and either you in a scary costume or a stuffed scary costume that looks like someone is sitting there. Of course you need to add a strobe light near the garage door that faces down the corridor that you made. Place the candy near the back so your tricker treaters have to walk in to get their candy. This is a cheap idea that added with the yard will create one heck of a scary house on the block.

Another freakish idea for the garage if you have room to play with would be putting the black material from ceiling to floor just like above, placing a table wrapped in aluminum foil and a fake body on the table. Now this one you will need some fake blood for. You can boil some spaghetti and added with fake blood you have intestines. Dress like a doctor and stand near the table acting like your operating on a patient. Don't forget to smear fake blood all over you. Whatever you do, you have to put the strobes in the garage to add that incredibly spooky effect.

A couple last ideas to add fear to the block would be placing thinned out cobweb in the trees and bushes. Don't forget a few spiders in the cobweb. One bag of cobweb will go a very long way once thinned out. In addition, add some spooky sound effects or scary fright music like what you hear on scary movies. Trust me a little goes a long way when setting all this up. All in all I have given you ways to create the scariest house on the block in just around $100. As you collect scary items over the years you can create one heck of a scary house and one that people will remember for years to come. Don't forget to watch a few scary movies to gather more ideas for your haunted house. By the way be nice to the little kids, they don't like spooky so much. Have a wonderful and safe frightful Halloween.

Thank you Loki. I now have a slideshow on AC that show the pictures of my house thus far and I haven't even come close to $100 this year. In fact, I have only spent about $15 this year based on the principles in my article.
