Creating a Switched Duplex Electrical Outlet in Your Home

Installation Tips for a Switched Duplex Electrical Outlet

An electrical outlet that is switch-operated has a distinct advantage in the home, particularly if the switch is located at an outside door. By controlling the electrical current from the door location, a single floor lamp or a table lamp can be used for entrance lighting as opposed to a ceiling light. If no ceiling fixture has been installed, then a greater advantage exists.

The installation of a switched duplex outlet may require upgrading a single switchbox to one that facilitates two switches. If there is no box, then installing a single switch box will fill the need. If wall modifications are to be done (as some of this work will require), it would be prudent to locate this information and follow any recommendations. Overall, this is a task that is within the ability of many homeowners.

First, turn off the electrical power to the circuit to be used and test to be certain no power is present. Remove selected outlet cover and outlet. Disconnect power supply wires from the outlet. If only one plug-in of the duplex is to be used with the switch, then the crossover link on the NEUTRAL side of the duplex must be interrupted. This is the connecting bar beneath the wire terminals on the duplex itself. Newer duplex outlets have serrations that make this a quick and easy process.

Using a good grade of 12 gauge solid copper wire with two conductors and one bare copper ground wire (12/2wgrd), run wire from outlet box to switchbox and connect wires to switch terminals. Install switch. Reconnect black (HOT) electrical power supply line to its proper terminal on duplex electrical outlet (should be shiny brass color). Using the length of white (Neutral) from the switch, make the connection to the upper duplex terminal (should be silver).

For the black wire coming from switch, it should be marked as a neutral with white tape or other conspicuous means to identify it in the future should the need arise. This wire should be spliced to the electrical supply line white wire (NEUTRAL) by means of a secure UL approved wire nut connector. An additional short length (often referred to as a pigtail), should be included in this splice and subsequently connected to the lower duplex terminal (should be silver). Reinstall duplex in its wall box and secure cover. Restore power to circuit and test.

The added convenience of a switched duplex outlet is a home improvement that can be appreciated time after time.

Remember, always work safely.
