Creating a Website Via Dreamweaver CS3

Greg Seltz
Naturally, creating an interactive website takes time and patience. For those persistent on special effects and advanced graphics, this brief tutorial may prove less than expected. However, assuming the reader has recently initiated the process of site construction and seeks knowledge in the aforementioned title, read on.

First and foremost, the user is required to register with a web host. For those unfamiliar with the term, a host is typically a company that has a constant connection to the internet. Once the web design is complete, you may upload the site to the respective server. Initially, though, you will want to engage the "Site" menu and establish a "New site." Proceed throughout the steps by accepting the default or entering information referencing your site. However, for the moment, the step that requires you to "Connect to the remote server" will be changed to "None." Shortly after we begin our page, we will return to this screen.

Proceed to "File/New" and choose your basic layout. Ensure, however, that you locate the "Layout CSS" menu and select "Create New File." This option allows the CSS information to be saved in a separate folder. Click "Create."

Notice the separate sections of the page and proceed to revise according. For example, below the toolbar a box will read "Untitled Document." Feel free to replace this text with the name of your site, etc. Anything else that you type in the header, footer, sidebars, and main content sections will appear once we publish our page.

Before you indulge in creativity, reassure that the content is saved often. Your next stopping point will allow us to upload the associated information to our web host. Run "Site/Manage Sites" and locate the title you initially created. Click "Edit." Advance to the step that we originally skipped. For the connection to the remote server, now we will want to select FTP. All of the requested information should have been released by your web host. For example, "What is the hostname or FTP address..." should be provided via email once your account is set up. Typically, web hosts will ask that you save all files in the "public_html" folder. Ensure that you type it exactly, without the quotations. Enter the FTP user name and password that was established via your web host. "Test Connection" will process the information and inform you whether the connection is successful or not. Click "Next/Done."

To conclude, you will want to proceed to the toolbar again and find "Site/Put." Finally, this will upload your web page to the FTP site and can be viewed or tested. Assuming all the information you entered was correct, your webpage should be visible after entering the URL.

Finished! The simple process will obviously guide you in uploading and publishing your webpage, however, the additional features and layout will be up to you.
