Creative Living Room Furniture Arrangement: Don't Put Everything Along Walls
The first temptation in a small living room is to keep the space large by putting all the furniture along the walls and leaving the space in the middle of the room open. However, if the furniture is arranged poorly, this method can leave things looking cluttered and sloppy, which is the last thing you want people to think. By considering methods of arrangement that put articles of furniture in the middle of the room, you will have far more options for arranging your living room furniture in a welcoming and inviting way.
Creative Living Room Furniture Arrangement: Use a Sofa to Break Spaces
One way to put the above step into practice is with your sofa. If your living room is fully connected to another room, you can use a carefully placed sofa to break the rooms apart and make them feel like more distinct areas, and also better regulate the flow of traffic. Treat your sofa as a movable wall, and use it along an open edge to make a doorway into the living room.
This will allow your living room to feel more well-rounded when people are sitting and talking because there will be items on all four sides of it, rather than on three sides with an opening into the kitchen or other adjoining room.
Creative Living Room Furniture Arrangement: Use a Corner Unit for Television
Corners of living rooms can be tricky because they seem to be useless spaces between furniture that can't be used for anything but filler coffee tables. If you purchase a corner unit for your television (it can be as simple as a small stand to put it on, or even a converted coffee table), you will save valuable straight wall space that the TV would normally be occupying. Arranging chairs and couches to form conversation areas instead of exclusively TV viewing areas will also create a more balanced and logical feel to your living room.
Creative Living Room Furniture Arrangement: Install Wall Shelving Instead of Bookshelves
One thing that can eat up a lot of space in a small living room is bookshelves containing books, movies, CD's, and more. A creative way to free up that space is to install shelving on the upper portion of your walls, allowing you to basically put your bookshelves on top of other furniture.
Home Depot and other home improvement stores have a number of options for self-installed shelves, and all you need to do is put the bottom brackets securely on the wall at the exact same height so you end up with a level shelf. Plus, this is often a lot less expensive than buying traditional bookshelves anyway.
