Creative Gift Idea: Birthday Card Kit

Robin Kay
Looking for a unique gift for your coworker, neighbor, or relative? Instead of sending another mix in a jar, this year put together a birthday card kit for a fun gift. With a birthday card kit, you will put together all the supplies your gift recipient will need to mail out birthday cards to their loved ones throughout the year. You can make this gift very personal, or keep it slightly generic for a coworker or relative you haven't seen in several years. This gift is easy to assemble and fun to give.

Cards

The fundamental part of this gift idea is a collection of birthday cards that your gift recipient can use. You can make your own by picking up some inexpensive card stock and embellishments at a local craft store. If you are a scrap booker you may already have the supplies to create your own birthday cards right in your craft room. Make sure to pick up some envelopes for your homemade cards at an office supply store.

If you choose to purchase birthday cards for your gift, prices can run from as little as .99 to just under $5 per card. Some stationary stores may sell boxed sets of birthday cards that can save you a little money.

Stamps

You can spend under $10 for a single book of stamps, or purchase a roll of a hundred stamps for under $50. Most post offices carry stamps with a festive "Happy Birthday" design on them.

Adding a Special Touch

This is where the birthday card kit can get really fun. If the recipient is a close friend or family member whose family information you can access, purchase a yearly or perpetual calendar and mark in it the birthdays your recipient may want to send a card out for. A new address book or personal organizer could be a thoughtful and practical addition to your birthday card kit. You can make or purchase address labels for your gift recipient, and even include stickers to decorate the envelopes.

Packaging

Stack the cards and envelopes neatly and then secure with a ribbon or raffia. Arrange the cards and other items in your kit in a pretty basket that your gift recipient can reuse. If you are short on time or baskets, a pretty gift bag or decorative box also work.

Other Variations

Create a Christmas card kit for an early holiday gift. A thank you card kit is a practical gift for a graduate or new parent.
