Creative Gifts for This Mother's Day

Heather Wood
Mom should be treated special all year long, but there is one day on the calendar that is put aside just for her. Mom needs to know that she is loved and appreciated and Mother's Day is the day to do it.

One creative gift idea for mom is one that involves a jar and slips of paper. The jar is decorated by her children and everyone puts something special that they love about their mother on the slips of paper. Common things written down would include such things as "You are loved"; "You are special"; "We love the way you take care of us"; We love your peanut butter cookies"; etc. Anything that shows mom how much she is loved. You could put in 365 slips of paper so that mom could enjoy one every day of the year and realize just how special to her family she truly is. This project works for grandmothers as well.

How about a 'Spa Day' for mom? You could either purchase supplies and put them in a basket decorated with a pretty bow or visit a local spa and purchase the services and present them to mom on her special day. What better way to make mom feel pampered?

How about making a meal for mom? Fathers can help with this gift by planning ahead, getting the groceries for the meal and assist or oversee the cooking. Don't forget about the clean up! (Or you could just take everyone out for a nice dinner!!)

A scavenger hunt for mom's gift can also be fun for Mother's Day. One creative gentleman had his wife going to the hairdressers (where he had made a previous appointment for her), then onto a spa for a massage, then out for dinner or you could just have it throughout your house with mom's gift at the end of it.

A simple and creative gift is to put a mix of mom's favorite music or songs on a CD.

What about breakfast in bed?

A tried and true gift is to buy a mother, some type of jewelry. Why not buy her a family ring or necklace with her children's birthstones on it?

Every woman loves chocolate. Though this gift may be not all that creative, chocolates are usually welcome and appreciated by most moms. How about chocolate covered pretzels for a little bit of twist on the traditional?

Time out for mom! How about hiring a babysitter or a cleaning lady to come into your house for a day to give mom a well deserved rest?

This would take a bit of extra time and planning, but a scrap book or photo album for mom would be a nice surprise. You can make color photocopies of old pictures and put together in a nice book. It can be of pictures while you were growing up or if the book is for grandma, it can be of her grandchildren.

If you want to be the talk of the whole year, why not get a meal catered in? It might cost you a bit, but you and the meal will sure to be a hit!

Though this idea may be pricey depending on how much you want to spend, a gift certificate to her favorite store can be a good idea. This way mom can spend the day shopping by herself or maybe even a friend. Don't forget to arrange for child care, if need be.

If you start thinking now about what to get mom, you will have plenty of time to shop around and get a perfect and creative gift!
