Materials you will need to create your fountain
A few pots, preferably clay or terra cotta pots.
A fountain pump
Wood, Nails and Caulk
Finally, plastic tubing
You will need to make sure that the spot where you choose for your fountain to be is near an outlet or some place where you can draw a little power. Since we are dealing with water, you also want to make sure that your fountain will be hooked up to a GFCI or ground fault circuit interrupt to prevent electrocution should the fountain pump get a short or fail. If you don't know how to do this, contact an electrician in your area.
Build a simple wood frame that will eventually house the 3 pots that will become your fountain. I suggest you build a square frame for simplicity's sake.
Take 2 of the pots and seal the drain holes using the caulk. This will prevent it from eventually rotting. You can also use a rubber sealant as an alternative. These pots will be the top 2 pots of our fountain.
In the last pot, you are going to want to take the plastic tubing and insert it into the drain hole and then, once again seal it.
The pots are going to be tiered and how you want to arrange them is to make it so the top two pots pour into the bottom pot. To do this, nestle the top pots at a 45 degree angle.
Once you have the pots in the place you want them, use the caulking gun to caulk the pots in place.
In order to hide the tubing, you will want to run the tubing along the framework into the top pot. You will also most likely want to hide the pump as well and placing it in the framework at the bottom should do the trick.
Finally, run the power cord of the pump to the GFCI outlet, turn on and watch as you have created a simple outdoor fountain made of terra cotta pots on a unbelievable budget!
This project can take just a couple hours out of your weekend to accomplish but the enjoyment that you will get out of it could last for years. Learning how to build a fountain from a pot is easy and probably more affordable than you may think....Once you have mastered this, then it is time to look into building that greco-roman marble fountain to place in your frontyard, right? Then again, I would spend a little time enjoying your new creation first.
