Jennifer Claerr
There are many creative and unusual pumpkin carving patterns that you can carve quickly and easily. These pumpkin carving patterns utilize line contours and props to create easy and creative jack-o'-lanterns. To use the patterns included with this article, click on the gray box in the upper left hand corner of the image, then select the number of the pattern you'd like to print. In the print preview, ensure that the pumpkin carving pattern takes up the entire page. Print it out on an 8 1/2 by 11 inch piece of paper. Carve out the top of the pumpkin, scoop out the seeds and pulp with a spoon and reserve them in a bowl. Tape the pumpkin carving pattern to your pumpkin, then use a needle or pointed pumpkin carving tool to poke through the black lines of the pattern into the skin of the pumpkin. Remove the pattern to begin carving your creative pumpkin design.

Creative Pumpkin Carving Idea With Free Pattern #1: Gun Shot Wound

Poke only the eyes and mouth of this pumpkin carving pattern. Don't poke the features on the sides; these features are only there to serve as a general guide. Carve the eyes and mouth of the gun shot wound pumpkin first. Then turn the pumpkin clockwise. Carve a hole with jagged edges as shown on the right side of the gun shot wound pumpkin carving pattern. Find a plastic toy gun and carve a hole on the other side of the pumpkin that is just large enough to fit the muzzle. It's important not to make the hole too large, because the gun must fit tightly to stay in place. Mix some light corn syrup with some red food coloring and set it aside. Set the carved pumpkin where it will be displayed on Halloween. Place the seeds and pulp from the inside of the pumpkin inside the jagged hole on the side, then allow it to spill out onto the ground. Drizzle some of the red corn syrup mixture on the pulp to mimic the appearance of blood.

Creative Pumpkin Carving Idea With Free Pattern #2: Killer Pumpkin

Carve out and remove all the areas on the pumpkin that are represented in yellow on the pumpkin carving pattern. Use a fine tool to carve the eyebrows and jagged teeth. Be very careful not to accidentally carve away or damage the teeth. Then take a slender loop tool and carve the area around the inner eyes by peeling back the top layer of the pumpkin's skin. These areas are indicated entirely in black in the eye area of the killer pumpkin carving pattern. Then use some creative methods to make your pumpkin look more like a killer. Mix light corn syrup and red food coloring and smear some of it on the teeth of the pumpkin to create the appearance of blood. You could also use red acrylic craft paint to make the teeth look bloody. You could also use other pumpkins to form the body of your killer pumpkin, and use this one as the head. Attach some twigs or gloves to the sides of the pumpkin, then attach a knife or other lightweight weapon for your pumpkin to wield. Also consider smashing another pumpkin in front of the killer pumpkin, then placing a piece or two of the smashed pumpkin in its mouth.

Creative Pumpkin Carving Idea With Free Pattern #3: Mummy Pumpkin

For best results, use a white pumpkin for the mummy pumpkin carving pattern. Carve out the eyes, nose and mouth as though they were made from mummy bandages. Then carve out the other slender slits in the mummy pumpkin carving pattern. Make your own slits on the sides and the back of the mummy pumpkin to look like mummy bandages. If you like, you can also carve the spaces between the mummy's bandages with a loop tool by peeling away only the top layers of the pumpkin. If you used an orange pumpkin, paint it antique white with acrylic craft paint after the carving is complete.

Creative Pumpkin Carving Idea With Free Pattern #4: Vampire Pumpkin

Carve out the eyes, eyebrows, nose and mouth of the vampire pumpkin. Then use a pencil draw on some hair with a widow's peak around the sides of the vampire pumpkin's face. If you like, you can also draw on a stiff collar around the vampire's chin and jaw. Make sure that your design looks exactly the way you want it, then paint the hair and collar in black acrylic craft paint.

Creative Pumpkin Carving Idea With Free Pattern #5: Devil Pumpkin

Carve the devil pumpkin's eyes, eyebrows, nose and mouth. Then get some red devil's ears to place in the top of the pumpkin. Plastic prop devil ears will work well if they are attached to a pin or toothpick which you can push into the top of the pumpkin. You can also fashion some devil's ears out of polymer clay. Insert a piece of stiff wire into each devil's ear, then bake it according to the polymer clay package directions. Paint the devil's ears red before inserting them in the top of the carved pumpkin.
