Vinyl mini blinds are low cost alternatives to metal, but they are not very stylish. They are solely for practical purposes since they can partially or completely block and redirect light. However, they are easy to decorate in a number of stylish ways. Cheap light-filtering mini blinds can be turned into very effective light-blocking shades in one easy step. They can be made far more vibrant, and they can be designed to coordinate with just about any color using the following creative ways to decorate the slats.
How to Create Room Darkening Vinyl Mini Blinds
I purchased vinyl mini blinds that were supposed to darken my bedroom, but they were cheap and light filtered in. When thinking of creative ways to decorate the room, I began with black satin Krylon Fusion spray paint. Krylon Fusion adheres to plastic, and it worked like a charm to darken my budget vinyl mini blinds. However, for the shades to continue operating I had to cover the cords with painter's tape. Since the blinds were tan I ended up with tan striped shades. Since the accent colors of the bedroom include black and tan, the plan worked quite well.
Before beginning, I wrapped the cords in a plastic bag and suspended the bag above the shades. I did not want to paint the cords and render the vinyl mini blinds inoperable. I hung them on an outdoor clothesline using sturdy twine.
With a little help from an extra pair of hands, I applied wide blue painter's tape to both sides of the blinds. I applied the tape as straight as possible on both sides of each blind. It was not perfect, but it worked well enough to decorate the window treatments in a very unique way while solving a problem.
Get Creative with Color
I used black Krylon Fusion spray paint to decorate and darken vinyl mini blinds, but Krylon makes dozens of colors. Consider creating colorful blinds for a child's bedroom. My daughter wants pink and lilac vinyl mini blinds, and when spring arrives I plan on buying her favorite colors. Kids are not overly picky when it comes to decorating errors, and a little over spray will only add to the uniqueness of the vinyl mini blinds. I am not afraid to try something new, and I am looking forward to a new way to decorate old sets of vinyl mini blinds.

Post a CommentI think that sounds like fun. We had white ones for years and now you make me wish we had tried this. Thanks, Crystal!
wow - what a cool way to turn blah vinyl blinds into ones with personality :)
I don't know Crystal, I think vinyl mini blinds can be very stylish when used properly. I have them in my house and I place flowers and other accessories around them. My house is not overly decorated. It's more classy, quietly sophisticated, elegant. I really love my mini blinds they are in ecru which is the only color I have on my walls and blinds. I guess it all depends on taste.
