Creative Ways to Invigorate Your Cereal: From Yogurt to Chocolate Chips

Beth and Lee McCain
Our family gets bored with just ordinary cereal with milk. We have made some wonderful concoctions with cereal that will take the boredom out of cereal and make it your favorite once again. Everything is made with items that you probably already have in your kitchen. Try one of these yummy twists for cereal.

Instead of putting milk with your cereal, try a helping of vanilla yogurt instead. It almost tastes like ice cream with sprinkles in it. It has the wonderful creamy texture of the yogurt with the crunch of the cereal.

This is an extension of the vanilla yogurt and your cereal. This works best with either Cheerios or uncooked oats. Put a handful of cereal with the vanilla yogurt and add a tablespoon of nuts. We prefer pecans but any nut will do. Mix in a half of an apple, half a banana, and either some grapes or oranges. This is a healthy breakfast that tastes so yummy. (My personal favorite!)

Take your chocolate chip cookie recipe and instead of the chocolate chips, add in some kind of flaky cereal like Special K or Honey Bunches of Oats. When the chocolate chips are replaced, the cookies take on kind of a buttery, toffee crunch taste.

I love to make homemade bread, especially oatmeal bread, but instead of putting in nuts, I like to put in Cheerios. Cheerios give the bread an extra punch of oats and it's different than nuts. So grab your favorite oatmeal bread recipe and try some Cheerios in it.

Use a 'flaky' cereal to make a mix for your chicken. Take one cup of crunched up flake cereal, 1 tsp. seasoning salt, and 1 tsp. of pepper. Mix it altogether. Take your chicken pieces and coat them with milk then roll the chicken in your crunch flake mix. Roll it a couple of times. Then place on a baking sheet and bake or fry like you normally would. This coats about 6 pieces of chicken. It is so nice and crunchy and there is no white flour involved.

Last but certainly not least is the macaroni and cheese. We love homemade macaroni and cheese. We love a crunchy top on our baked mac n cheese so what we do is put a thin layer of jack cheese, sprinkle some Parmesan, and crunch up flake cereal on the top. When it comes out of the oven, it is so cheesy with a bit of crunch. YUM!

So there are just a few ways to use the old cereal without any milk. Come to think of it, I think I'll go get some yogurt and oats. It sounds pretty good right about now.
