Creative Ways to Serve Waffles to Kids

Sally Albright
My kids love waffles. I try to make them fun to eat whenever I serve them to my children for breakfast. By being creative with the waffles the kids don't become easily bored with them. Here are some ideas on how you can serve waffles to your children in an easy and fun way.

With Colored Icing

Growing up my mom would serve us waffles with a powdered sugar icing as a special treat. Homemade powdered sugar icing is extremely easy to make. All you need to do is place some powdered sugar into a bowl and add small amounts of milk to it until it has reached the desired consistency. I like ours to be a little runny but not too thin. To add color simply add food coloring to the icing and stir. I usually divide the icing into smaller bowls and color each one differently to offer my kids a variety of colors to choose from.

Hole in the Center

Cut out a hole in the center of the waffle and fill with whip cream for dipping. Or you can fill with maple syrup. You can even put fresh fruit into the center hole of the waffle. The possibilities are endless and it is a great way to serve waffles to your kids.

Breakfast Sandwich

Waffles make a great substitute for English muffins and bagels for a delicious breakfast sandwich. You can serve them filled with apple slices, sausage, and cheese. Or you can put in any filling you like. Waffles can be left whole or you can divide them into four squares, or triangles for delicious miniature breakfast sandwiches. These would make great on the go breakfasts for the entire family.

Waffles on a Stick

One fun way to serve waffles to your children is to put them on popsicle sticks or let them eat the pieces using a toothpick. The toothpick is recommended for older children of course. Keeps their hands from getting messing and gives them a fun way to eat this breakfast staple.

Cut Them Up

Cut your waffles into different shapes to make them more visually appealing for your children. Heart shapes are often popular for young kids. You can also cut into strips which they can dunk into maple syrup or the icing above. Miniature cookie cutters would be a great way to turn your waffles into great finger food as well.

Sliced Fruit

Slices of fruit can dress up many breakfast dishes. For waffles you can top them with sliced apples, bananas, strawberries, or whole blueberries for a delicious and healthy treat. You could even make dessert using a base of waffles topped with bananas and a drizzle of chocolate or caramel. Add a scoop of ice cream and you are good to go.

Waffle Art

You can slice up your waffles giving each piece its own unique shape and let your children put them back together to create their own edible piece of art. After your child is done making their masterpiece they get to deconstruct them and eat them!
