Creative Writing Lesson - Write Song Parodies

SE
When looking to teach creative writing in the classroom, why not incorporate music as well? Having your students write song parodies is fun, and they'll learn something along the way.

When writing a song parody, one has to not only employ creative writing skills, but write something that fits the tune of a song. You're forced to think about how words sound. This can be used in the classroom or for any writer who wants practice with creative writing.

You don't have to produce songs as great as Weird Al when you write parodies. Just have fun with it. Have students share their parodies with the class. The class can discuss how well the parody works - does the song make sense, were sentence structures modeled closely, etc. This way you're also incorporating analytical skills into the lesson.

For an example, here is a parody I did several years ago of Alicia Bridges' I Love the Nightlife, entitled I Love the Roastbeef.

"Please don't talk about turkey tonight.
Please don't talk about hamburger.
Please don't talk about big steaks and the sizzle they make on the grill.
Ah, please don't talk about all of the meats you have in your big deep freezer.
I want to eat somethin' better.
I want some taste....I want to eat!

Taste... it's got so much to give.
I want to get it. I want to salivate too.

Oh, I...Ohhh I...I love the roastbeef
I got to keep Arby's in business, oh yeah.
Oh, I love the roastbeef
I got to keep Arby's in business, oh yeah.

Please don't talk about chicken tonight.
Your clucking sounds won't make it right.
Other meats just bring me down when you've got KFC's all over town.
You can eat it all and when you're through, maybe that'll make, huh, a chicken out of you.
I want to eat somethin' better.
I want some taste...I want to eat!

Taste...it's got so much to give.
I want to get it. I want to salivate too.

Oh, I...Ohhh I...I love the roastbeef
I got to keep Arby's in business, oh yeah.
Oh, I love the roastbeef
I got to keep Arby's in business, oh yeah.
Oh, I love the roastbeef
I got to keep Arby's in business, oh yeah.
Oh, I love the roastbeef
I got to keep Arby's in business, oh yeah.
Oh, I love the roastbeef
I got to keep Arby's in business, oh yeah."
