'Creature' Looks to Marry Slasher and Sci-Fi Genres Together

Film Comes Out in September

There's an interesting creature feature coming out soon titled simply "Creature." Probably not the most original or smartest thing to call your monster movie, but that's what we've got to work with here. The film looks to be mixing two genres that usually aren't put together. It could give "Creature" the edge on other monster movies it needs to stand out from the rest of the pack.

The story of "Creature" revolves finds and "ex-Navy seal, his girlfriend and their friends [who] head out on a road trip to New Orleans. The group decides to stop at a roadside convenience store owned by Chopper, who tells them the tale of Lockjaw, a fabled god-like creature who is half-man, half-alligator. Their curiosity peaked, the group decides to play along with the local tourist trap and journey deep into the backwoods to find the old dilapidated cabin which is supposed to be the birthplace of the creature. As they set-up camp for the night, their faith is put to the test when Lockjaw turns out to be more than just a myth and they realize the locals are hiding a horrifying secret that jeopardizes them all."

"Creature" looks to be an interesting mix of "Friday the 13th" and "Swamp Thing." The trailer shows a group of young adults camping out in the woods. Then you add a mutated creature and have the mutated creature hunt the campers down one by one. There you have it. It's nothing particularly original, but it's still a great formula for some entertaining sci-fi slasher action.

The cast of "Creature" includes some recognizable names and faces from top television shows and movies. First, we've got horror icon Sid Haig as Chopper, the owner of the convenience store the travelers stop at. Haig is a veteran actor who has become well-known as a genre regular in "Halloween," "The Devil's Rejects," "House of 1,000 Corpses," and many more. Mehcad Brooks has starred in "True Blood" and "Ghost Whisperer." Serinda Swan has been seen in "TRON: Legacy," "Smallville," and "Supernatural." Amanda Fuller has appeared in "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer" and "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit." The rest of the cast includes Dillon Casey, Lauren Schneider, Aaron Hill, and Daniel Bernhardt.

Fred M. Andrews directed and co-wrote "Creature." He has worked as a production designer on films and TV shows such as "The Crow: Wicked Prayer" and "CSI: Miami." This is Andrews' feature film directorial debut.

The movie is executive produced by Paul Mason. Mason helped produce "Day of the Dead," "The Amityville Horror," "Killer Klowns from Outer Space," and many more. He has had quite an extensive career in Hollywood.

The much sought-after wiz Roland Blancaflor handled special effects for "Creature." He is currently working on Zack Snyder's "Superman: Man of Steel," "The Avengers," and "The Amazing Spider-Man." Now if that doesn't impress you, I don't know what will.

"Creature" is Rated R for bloody violence, grisly images, some sexual content, graphic nudity, language, and brief drug use. It is being released through The Bubble Factory and Lockjaw Productions on September 9, 2011.
