CREDIT. Am a Social Security Beneficiary and Already Indecision is Affecting

How Creditors "React"

John J. Suarez-/Amen John I (pn)

With all the indecision still in limbo in Washington, recently my Television broke down. Of course I have others, but this unit was a fairly new one which was one of my favorites. Last week, I decided to apply to buy another one on credit. About Tuesday, if I remember right. At the time, my creditor took down the television I was interested in and looked up my information, of which I have been doing business with this place for over a year. In that time, I paid off my account once, and decided to buy yet another item to which I still owe a small balance. Knowing I am on Social Security disability, I never thought of the idea that these people were leery of granting me the credit to purchase the TV when I was told to call back, today, Monday, August 1st.

Having almost forgotten about calling, I picked up the phone and called customer service. Upon talking to the woman at the credit department, she made some excuse like, "We haven't gotten around to your application yet or a review. Call us back by the end of the week or better yet maybe 'next' Monday." Having good credit with these people, it got me to thinking that this was kind of strange. So I told the woman that I "would" if I did not make a deal with yet another creditor I do business with. At that, she stated, "Alright," and we left it at that.

It did not occur to me that all this might stem from the fact of being on Social Security, since I had never had this trouble with anyone I do business "before." Usually, with many of my creditors when I get in jam, I give them a call and usually they will meet my needs that very same day. Not this time. Here it is a almost a week later and I got this "put off" like I am not responsible enough to consider on a debt. And the ridiculous part is, with someone I haven't even missed a payment "with."

Myself, I am still leery of whether my wife will receive her survivors benefits on Wednesday. I still think it crazy how Social Security put her on that check. After filing to get the benefits "or" part of them after ex-husband died, she waited for over 7 months without hearing a word from Social Security. When I called them to find out "why," they stated that she was getting a substantial amount and that they were "still" figuring it all out.

To make a long story short, in the end, they gave her this check after taking $221 from her disability, taking $221 from MY disability and applying $20 from her ex-husband's benefits to the check "or" over $400 monthly. Idiotically, over the years, my disability is now down to a measly $284, while my wife get most of my check, $20 from her ex-husband's record, and "now," her own disability is the same as mine. Talk about "stupid." Stupid for us for we have had to manipulate how we pay our debts, but not stupid for Social Security as all they paid out from my wife's ex-husband's benefits was $80 in back pay, making my wife wait for nearly a year. And NOW, only $20 a month come from his benefits calling ALL of it SURVIVORS BENEFITS? Totally ridiculous when $221 of it comes from MY DISABILITY.

The ludicrous part of all, is that Social Security made her wait close to a year for "this?" Two hundred and eighty-four dollars out of "my" SSI, while she only gets twenty dollars from her ex-husband "monthly." I know I am repeating it, only because I still can't believe "I" am made to support this move. It's like she never applied PERIOD, except to get "two" checks now and an extra twenty dollars. So over the last three years, we "have to" buy everything "jointly" putting both incomes together to buy practically ANYTHING.

Good part of it all, is the fact that we had good credit with many of our creditors "BEFORE" all this manipulation of funds by Social Security, so our good credit with many people was not affected until "now." Now, because of all this "insecurity" the government has created within whether they will be responsible enough to pay Social Security recipients. Wasn't bad enough that our income is at poverty level and makes it hard to get anything to begin with, but now even some creditors don't wish to risk the chance of not being paid. Lovely world we live in and being disabled, even "LOVELIER."

As for the TV? Well, I decided if I have to get one, why get a small one when I have a good creditor to let us buy one with that is large, LED, and has a DVD player built in? At my age I can't afford to be rated on credit depending on the credit rating of the "government" and being close to death, I want my last days to be "comfortable" at what ever it cost.

I have taken care of a mentally disabled person for over 26 years. In that time not "once" has Social Security ever said thank you. I HAVE, been under scrutiny by them, lost a $35,000 house because of their false accusations against me, but yes, not ONCE, been told, "thank you." Good thing, I worked for a living, and gained the respect of many long before I became "disabled.........." I have what I have because I "still" barter work for my needs "when" I can "how" I can. Sick or NOT. Doctors are constantly warning me, but who can a man depend on? The "government......?"
