Creighton University: Finding Reflections on Catholic Daily Mass Readings

Nora Beane
Reflections on Catholic daily mass readings are ordinarily given at mass as part of the homily or sermon for the day. But not everyone has the luxury of time that might allow them to attend daily mass, getting to Sunday mass is enough of a challenge. For those who still want to be refreshed or renewed by reflections offered on Catholic daily mass readings there is a great on line service provided by Creighton University that you will certainly value.

Creighton University can be found in the Midwestern city of Omaha Nebraska, far away from many other like minded universities more often located on the east and west coast of the U. S. Creighton though Midwestern in its geography is Catholic in its mission. Operated through the direction of the Society of Jesus, Creighton University offers undergraduate, graduate and professional programs. Regardless of the course work one may take up at Creighton it would be difficult not to recognize that the spirit of learning here is framed in the Jesuit tradition similar to that found in schools like Boston College and Georgetown University.

Like many Catholic colleges, Creighton has developed its own campus ministry program which offers those who are part of the Creighton community an opportunity to celebrate liturgy and participate in other faith enhancing and service oriented programs . The goal is always to further the Gospel message and thereby to make a difference in the world. In an ongoing effort to bathe its faculty, staff, alumni, students, neighbors and other interested readers in the Catholic faith, Creighton also promotes on line ministry that includes retreat, prayer and reflection options

My own discovery and joy has been Creighton University's on line Daily Reflections. After reading through the mass readings of the day on a site offered by the Catholic Conference of Bishops for the U. S. , you can make a quick click and find yourself at the calendar page for Creighton University Daily Reflections. Each daily reflection during the month is provided by a different member of the Creighton community. You might read what the president of the University has to say about a gospel reading from John or what a secretary from the law school finds most moving about an Old Testament reading from the Book of Psalms.

What adds flavor to each reading is the fact that before you turn to the reflection you can turn to an author page which will tell you a little bit about the background of the faculty or staff member who is supplying the reflection. The result is a constant variety of reflections some heavy on theology some more centered on every day living, but all written with conviction and faith.

There are lots of good ways to start your day. A good cup of coffee, some fresh orange juice, a jog are all helpful to get the juices flowing. But if you want to begin the day connected to God and other members of the Catholic Christian community, give Creighton University's on line reflections a chance.
