Cricket Kid's Remote Control: A Product Review

Kid's Own Personal Remote Control, a Great Idea

PennyB
I recently saw this product, The Cricket Kid's Remote Control, advertised on television and thought it was such a great idea that I decided to write about it to help inform other concerned parents who may not have seen it yet. If your child is old enough to turn the television on by themselves, then maybe it's time they also had their very own remote control. The Cricket Kid's Remote Control is designed specifically for younger children and is very easy for them to use.

I never had to worry too much about what my own children were watching. Back in the day, there weren't many programs that were "questionable" for children's young eyes and minds. Besides, my children never really watched much television other than Sesame Street and Mr. Dressup. When their programs were over, they were outside playing. Unfortunately, those days are long gone and there are more and more channels to be concerned about with cable or satellite tv.

By the time my granddaughter came along, however, there were already a lot more channels and many shows on television that I just didn't want her watching when she was in our home. I even worried when she was in possession of the remote, fearful of what she might bypass while channel surfing to get to her favorite stations. Television was already starting to become "risqué" and pretty much anything was being shown at all hours of the day. Even some commercials were questionable in my opinion.

It seems that the advertisers who put this commercial together for the Cricket Kid's Remote Control had the very same concerns, with regards to young children seeing things they shouldn't while changing channels to get to their favorite kid's show, so I know that I am not alone in my views. Of course, as parents, we can block out certain stations, but this can still be frustrating and counterproductive, as even the most unassuming channels can still show adult content when you least expect it.

Thankfully someone has come up with the ingenious idea of a "personal kid's remote control" and I think it's fabulous. The parent can program the "children only" channels into the remote. When the child wants to watch television, all they have to do is pick up their own colorful, fun remote control, that is easy to manage in their little hands. The only programs they will be able to access will be their own "safe" children's channels.

The remote is made of durable plastic with no sharp edges for them to hurt themselves. The buttons are easy for them to read or understand with icons as well as numbers, and easy to press with their little fingers. On the top of the remote control, there is even a window where you can either upload your child's photo or a picture of their favorite cartoon character. This will make it fun and more personal for them to use that they won't even want to use the adult's remote anymore.

The price is listed at a reasonable $13.49 retail on one particular web site, however, prices may vary depending upon your location (I believe the price is slightly higher, at approximately $20, in Canada).

Disclaimer: I do not work for this company or any company that sells this product. I am only a concerned parent/grandparent that has become so disillusioned with what has become "acceptable" for television viewing, even during the hours when our children are watching tv. If the executives of the television stations won't program their shows, and adult oriented advertisements, at acceptable hours of the day (which I do understand might be next to impossible in this modern age of cable and satellite television), then what we need are products such as the Cricket Kid's Remote Control. This product gives us, as parents, more input and more control, as well as peace of mind over what our young children are seeing on the television screen.
