Crime Rise Linked to Economy; Warning Goes Out to Soldiers and Civilians of Fort Bragg, N.C

Fayetteville City Council Tells Police Chief to "Get it Under Control"

Safety Officers on Fort Bragg today are warning of a spike in robbery and assault crimes in Fayetteville, NC.

In just two weeks soldiers from one major command on the post were victims of 1 carjacking, 2 assaults with intent to rob, and 1 serious assault. Announcements that went out today said that these are just a part of the crime increase seen over the past 12 months.

The announcement linked the crime rates directly to the economy; stating that when the local economy is strong crime decreases, and when the economy is weak crimes against persons and property increase. The military community is known for having a consistent source of income, which is demonstrated by the housing market that has stayed comparably steady through economic turbulence.

A Fort Bragg safety bulletin suggests pre-planning stops for ATM cash, fuel, etc; and being aware of your surroundings as first steps in avoiding crimes of this type.

According to the web-site NeighborhoodScout.com, Fayetteville rates a 2 on their crime index, 100 being the best. They contend that Fayetteville is only safer than 2% of the cities in the U.S. with your chance of becoming a victim of a property crime in Fayetteville being 1 in 12.

Gilbert Baez of ABC11 News Fayetteville reported on 18 February that Fayetteville's Chief of Police is under fire from city council to get crime under control. Chief Bergamine will get a chance to present his crime prevention plan to the city council in April.

Chief Bergamine says there are a number of reasons for the increase, including last year's bad economy, which echoes the reason stated on the Fort Bragg safety bulletin.

Robberies in Fayetteville are up 31 percent, while aggravated assaults are up a sharp 21 percent. Burglaries have increased by 9.5 percent, and Neighborhood Crime Watch coordinators in surrounding areas are also reporting an increase in criminal activity.
