Criminal Minds - Goodbye, Jason Gideon

L Warren
The premier of Criminal Minds, which had promised to explain the departure of cast-member, Mandy Patinkin, delivered on that promise in a most disturbing turn of events. The show opened its season with murders of brown-haired college, female, college students raising personal issues for Jason Gideon (Mandy Patinkin). In an attempt to capture an unexpected second killer Gideon makes choices that lead to a murder/suicide in which both killers are involved. Agent Aaron Hotchner, of course, shares culpability.

As is characteristic of Criminal Minds, the usual brand of profiling and investigation ensues - but with a difference.

Throughout the episode the viewer is witness to Agent Gideon's thought process as he writes a letter, which could possibly be a letter to a colleague or friend, explaining what the viewer may believe is Gideon's decision to leave his position with the FBI.

Once the particularly gruesome murder case has been resolved by the murder/suicide attention is focused on Agent Hotchner's disciplinary meeting, as Agent Gideon puts the finishing touches on his letter. The true intent of the letter, and the meaning of Gideon's picking up the gun that has been laying on his desk, are not revealed in the season's first episode.

In general, the show's premier was consistent with the approach to which viewers have become accustomed. In general, it managed to focus on the season's first case while subtly addressing Gideon's emotional turmoil. Ending the season premier episode with a cliffhanger was a clever way to bring at least some first-time viewers back at least once more. In view of Gideon's prominence in the show I was somewhat surprised that his turmoil remained as much a back-story as it did through the episode. I had expected just a little more of that story line. On the whole, I found the season premier of Criminal Minds much like all of its previous episodes - but that isn't a bad thing.

I loved Jason Gideon in the show Criminal Minds. I was so sad to see him go. After playing the role he had to play I wouldn't blame him. I watch Criminal Minds till this very day. I mainly view it online at DISHOnline.com. Working for DISH I have learned that you can watch new and older shows online and it’s FREE! I can even set up DVR recording for future events. It's a great thing to have for all TV lovers like myself.

Really miss Mandy Patinkin. To me he was the best of a wonderful cast. I do not like his replacement. I prefer watching the reruns with Gideon in them.
Bring him back is right and lose that other guy.
