Crispy Cat Vegan Candy Bars: An Environmentally and Health Conscious Candy Bar

Racheline Maltese
Crispy Cat bills itself as a line of organic candy bars, and while I'm not entirely sure that their products quite count as candy, I will say that they are very good.

Crispy Cat candy bars come in three flavors: roasted peanut, mint chocolate and toasted almond. They retail for $1.99 in stores and can also be found at some online outlets. Crispy Cat candy bars are vegan, gluten free, dairy free and contain a high percentage of organic products, ranging between 70% and 92%. Crispy Cat makes an effort to make it clear that these are not energy or nutritional bars, but rather candy bars aimed at a health and environment audience.

As someone with celiac disease, I can't eat wheat, so any new gluten free product immediately catches my attention, and I was quick to try the Crispy Cat candy bar in Mint Coconut and was pleasantly surprised. The mint flavor is very natural and not overwhelming at all. Despite the thiness of the chocolate that coats the Crispy Cat candy bar, there is an excellent balance of chocolate and mint flavor. Finally, the texture of the Crispy Cat coconut mint candy bar is fantastic -- light and crynch, the Crispy Cat is easy to chew, feels substantial and doesn't have those awful thread-like pieces of coconut that can easily get stuck in your teeth.

Of the three flavors of Crispy Cat candy bars, the mint chocolate flavor is the most like a candy bar. In taste and texture this Crispy Cat candy bar is probably most similar to a Girl Scouts thin mint cookie. The two nut-based flavors of Crispy Cat candy bars, while sweet, do taste more like a health food item and would probably be appealing to someone who really enjoys nut flavors, but wouldn't taste like candy to the average consumer. Texture remains excellent, especially in the almond bar.

Crispy Cat candy bars are good enough that I will travel 30 minutes out of my way (and I have to, they are not available in many locations yet) to get one if I am having a crazing. The packaging also recommends trying them frozen, which I find is great with the chocolate mint flavor, but weird with the Crispy Cat nut flavors. If you're looking for a responsible but sinful snack or have dietary restrictions from animal products or gluten by choice or necessity, Crispy Cat icandy bars well worth checking out.
