Cristie Kerr Runs Away with the LPGA Championship

Cristie Kerr Realizes Her Dream

Fran Brockmyre
Cristie Kerr wanted to be the number one woman golfer in the world. She accomplished that this weekend by winning the LPGA Championship tournament in Pittsford, New York. Japan's Ai Miyazato was number one and had to finish second place or better to retain the title. She finished tied for third.

Wegman's grocery chain has sponsored the LPGA tournament in Pittsford, New York every year since 1977. This year the LPGA Championship, a major tournament for the ladies, took place instead of the annual event. Most likely the annual event will return next year.

Kerr grabbed the lead by 8 strokes on day three and never gave it up. With Kerr in command of the tournament the excitement lie in who would take second place. Several players were in contention. Jimin Kang, Mika Miyazato and Azahara Munoz, a rookie from Spain, were tied at 5 under par. Tied for third were Song-Hee Kim and last year's Wegman's LPGA winner Jiyai Shin. Shin was playing for the first time since having an emergency appendectomy a couple of weeks ago. Ai Miyazato, no relation to Mika, was tied for 8th place 14 strokes behind Kerr.

On Sunday, Ai Miyazato stepped up her game and came very close to finishing second. She had seven birdies in the last round and finished 5 under par, tying for third place with Shin. Kerr, however, played a bogey-free round and dominated the course. Her focus and determination were unmatched as she played machine-like golf. She proved that she is truly number one.

Kerr is the first American to win the LPGA Championship since Juli Inkster won it in 2000. World rankings were introduced in 2006 for the LPGA and Kerr is the fifth player to hold the number one spot. With the retirement of Annika Sorenstam and Lorena Ocho, it is good to see other players filling the void with such outstanding performances.
