Criteria Teachers Use to Grade College Papers

Todd Hicks
Are you about to become a freshman at a university? If so, you should expect to have to write a lot of papers. Some are easier to do than others; however, you should succeed if you always take the right steps. You will learn how professors and instructors grade college papers.

Your document must be typed rather than written by hand. Unlike high school where you probably were allowed to write your papers in ink, you cannot do this at this level. Even if your teacher does not implicitly forbid doing your work by hand, you should expect to get a lower grade if you do not type your work.

You turned it in on time. If you turn in your work after the deadline, you will get a grade that is lower than it otherwise would have been.

Your work is well written and easy to read and comprehend. If your work has a lot of spelling or grammatical errors, you will be penalized.

They want you to start out by using a good introduction. It should explain what the paper is about.

They want a solid paper. It is crucial to have a body, or main part of the document, that supports the introduction while flowing smoothly between it and the end.

They insist for you to be on point. They want you to follow up on what you said you would do at the beginning. You must stick to the main point you make.

They pay attention to how you finish. It is essential to have a strong conclusion that supports your introduction and body while summing up what you have said.

Some of them do not like wordiness or the use of extra words such as "that". For example, if you are including a sentence pertaining to what you think about something in particular, you could write, "I think you did a good job."

They focus on whether you mostly did things the right way or the wrong way. It is imperative to follow all of their instructions closely.

The way you do your research can make or break you. You must cite all of your sources and do it according to the established guidelines.

They look at the quality of your work. They want you to organize your paragraphs and ideas well, be consistent and put forth a lot of effort.

You have learned how professors and instructors grade college papers.
