Special Stitch
If you are not ready for post stitches, when you come to this round of the hat, just work the stitches in the front loop for a similar effect.
Front post single crochet (FPsc): From the right side, insert hook from front-to-back-to-front around the post of the designated stitch (st), yarn over (yo), draw yarn through st, yo, draw yarn through 2 loops (lps) on hook.
In other words, what you are doing is working the stitch around the vertical stem or post of the stitch, not into the horizontal loops at the top of the stitch.
