Materials Needed for the Granny Square Poncho
To make the granny square poncho, you need yarn, a crochet hook, a yarn needle, and scissors. While a thick yarn is best for cold weather, you can fashion this poncho in any specialty yarn as well. You can even make the basic design in a light weight yarn for a more delicate look.
Basic Granny Square Directions
A granny square is one of the most basic of all crochet stitch motifs. You begin each granny square with six or seven chain stitches that you then form into a ring. This is the center of your granny square. TO move to the next level, simply make three chain stitches. Finish the crochet cluster with two double crochet stitches. Then chain two. Repeat the directions for the granny square cluster and the two chain stitches until you have four sides of a little square. The next row is made with three chain stitches to start and then a granny square cluster in each space of the previous row.
How to Assemble the Granny Square Poncho
There are several ways that you can make a granny square poncho. The first method is to use a large quantity of small size granny squares. These smaller crochet motifs will be stitched together into two rectangle shapes. The larger rectangle will lay over one shoulder down to the waist on the opposite side. The other rectangle will be smaller and serve to cover the other shoulder. These rectangles must be stitched together in the middle. That will form a diagonal seam across the chest.
Another way of making a granny square poncho would be to make one large granny square for both the front and the back of the poncho. One point of the granny square would hang down in the front and the other would fold over at the neckline. These granny squares would be stitched together at the shoulders.
The large granny squares should only be stitched up about three quarters of the way on the edge. The top triangle will fold down on either side. It will form a bib-like collar. This type of granny square poncho looks best on rather slender people. Otherwise, the poncho will become to long if stitched to accommodate their width.
The granny square is one of the easiest of all crochet designs, and this poncho uses them in its construction. This easy granny square poncho is not only easy to crochet, but very fashionable and warm as well.

Post a CommentRegarding your short and simple instructions on making a "large expanding" Granny Square, Thank You.
I have looked on several crochet sites, googled the subject, I knew there was something I wasn't doing right to keep my rows and rounds "raised and square".
I actually found a 5 page instructional on making a large Granny Square! Needless to say, I didn't use it, then I went to How Stuff works.com, from there I came to this site, how truly cool this is! "The People's Media"
Now, I have finished my square, going to make ponchos, afghans, etc.(i have 5 grandchildren) for Christmas.
Also, my area of expertise has always been grammar and the written word. You could call me a frustrated writer. I'm going to check out everything else this site has to offer.
I would love to contact or hear more about the person or persons who had the idea for this site.
Sincerely,
