For the practice piece you will need a small amount of worsted weight yarn and an H/5mm hook. Don't worry too much about gauge, just don't work too loose or too tight.

Row 1: Ch 13, dc in the 9th ch from the hook, ch 4, sc into the last ch. Turn. You should have a piece that looks like 2 empty squares.
Row 2: Ch 3(counts as the first dc), pushing your stitches close to each other, 9 dc in the first loop, dc in the dc, 9 dc in the last loop, dc into the top of the 3rd ch of row 1. Turn
(You will have 21 dc)
Row 3 : Ch 5 (counts as the first dc and ch-2), skip the next dc, dc in the next dc, *ch 2, skip next dc, dc in the next dc, rep from * 7 more times, ch 2, dc in the top of the turning ch-3. Turn. (You will have 10 spaces.)
Row 4: Ch 3 (counts as the first dc), *3 dc in next ch-2 space, dc in
next dc, rep from * 8 more times, 3 dc in last space, dc in 3rd ch of beg ch-5. Turn. (You will have 41 dc)
Row 5: Ch 5 (counts as the first dc and ch-2), skip the next dc, dc in the next dc, *ch 2, skip next dc, dc in the next dc, rep from *16 more times, ch 2, dc in the top of the turning ch-3. Turn. (You will have 20 spaces and 21 dc) Do Not Turn. Fasten off leaving an 8 inch end for sewing if you are going to make additional scallops in alternating colors. If you are making the same color for each motif, don't leave a length as it is easier to join them later with a separate length.
Second Vertical Scallop
Row 1: With first scallop facing you, sl st in the 9th dc of the first scallop, ch1, sc in the same st, ch 4, skip next dc, dc in center dc ( the 11th), ch 4, skip next dc, sc in next dc, sl st into each ch of the next ch-2 space, sl st in next dc. Turn. (You will have 2 spaces)
Row 2: 10 dc in the ch-4 space, dc in next dc, 10 dc in the last ch-4 space, sl st in the next dc of previous scallop, sl st each ch of the next ch-2 space, sl st in next dc. Turn (You will have 21 dc)
Row 3: Ch 2, skip next 2 dc, dc in 3rd dc, *ch 2, skip next dc, dc in next dc, rep from * 7 more times, ch 2, sl st in the next dc of previous scallop, sl st into each ch of the next ch-2 space, sl st in next dc. Turn. (You will have 10 spaces)
Row 4: : Ch 3 (counts as the first dc), *3 dc in next ch-2 space of the scallop, dc in next dc, rep from * 8 more times, 3 dc in last space, sl st in the next dc of previous scallop, sl st each ch of the next ch-2 space, sl st in next dc. Turn. (You will have 41 dc)
Row 5: Ch 2, skip next 2 dc, dc in 3rd dc, *ch 2, skip next dc, dc in next dc, rep from * 7 more times, ch 2, sl st in the next dc of previous scallop. Fasten off leaving a length for sewing. Do Not Turn (You will have 20 spaces with 4 unworked spaces on each side.)
Third and each addition Vertical Scallop
Rows 1-5: Sl st into the second dc before the center dc of the previous scallop. Rep rows 1-5 of Second Vertical Scallop.
Make the strips as long as you wish. Then using the lengths of yarn, whip stitch the units together. Weave in all yarn tails.
