Crochet Poncho for Baby - Materials Needed
This crochet poncho is fashioned from medium weight yarn. You can use baby yarn for a looser stitch, or something like narrow chenille for a softer feel. Choose colors that you like, or use a combination of white and pastel ombre yarn. You will also need a size I arghan crochet hook, a size H regular crochet hook, and a yarn needle. An afghan crochet hook is long and straight with a cap on one end to act as a yarn stopper.
Crochet Poncho for Baby - The Basic Stitches
This crochet poncho is made with the afghan stitch. This crochet stitch requires a special afghan crochet hook. Basically, you chain stitch the length of the finished project or square and then stick the hook under the top thread on each chain all the way back down the line. Yarn under at each loop and pull the yarn through to make the stitch. At the end of the row, you will have no more loops on the crochet hook and you can start the next row. This makes a very tightly crocheted finished project: perfect for a warm baby poncho.
Crochet Poncho for Baby - Constructing the Poncho
This crochet poncho is made from thirty-six individual squares of afghan stitch. The pattern and colors of each square depends on your individual tastes. Each square should be nine rows of afghan stitch. You can make them solid or striped by changing the yarn at each row or two.
Once you have all the crochet squares completed, you must use the yarn needle to sew them together. First, arrange the squares in a rectangle nine squares long and three squares wide. The remaining nine squares should be positioned in a square that sticks up from the right side of the rectangle. You will have an "L" laying on its back. Stitch all these squares together. Then stitch the top of the short side of the "L" to the top of the long rectangle, leaving a space for the head to stick through. A simple single crochet can be done around the neck opening. You have made the crochet poncho for baby.
Crochet Poncho for Baby - The Trim and Bow
To finish the crochet poncho, a fancy trim can be added to the bottom edges. Scalloped chain stitch, bobble stitches or even fringe can be used. Making a long strip of chain stitch with a second row of single crochet can form a tie that can be fashioned into a bow for the neckline. Simply use your yarn needle to stitch the bow onto the front of the crochet poncho.

Sounds so cute! I wish I was able to do stuff like this. I've tried, but just don't have the patience for it.
I've knitted but never crocheted. I must try it.
