Crochet Project: Country Gingham Oven Mitt
Whether for Baking or Barbeque Season, Be Sure to Have This Mitt on Hand
One Size Fits Most
Materials:
4 ounces each blue and white knitting worsted weight yarn (or colors of your choice), each skein divided in half.
Crochet hook Size I or size required for gauge.
Yarn needle
Gauge:
3 sc = 1 inch
3 rows = 1 inch
Abbreviations:
sc: single crochet
slst: slip stitch
inc: increase
dec: decrease
Notes: The piece is worked with two strands held together throughout. The remaining two strands are carried under the work. When changing colors, pull new color through last loop of sc to complete previous stitch. Carry strands not being used loosely across stitches and work stitches over them.
Body: (Make 2)
With two strands of blue, ch 19.
Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook (counts as sc), sc in each of next 2 sc. Attach 2 strands of white, sc in each of next 3 ch, drop 1 white strand. With 1 blue and 1 white strand, sc in each of next 3 ch, drop white strand. Work 3 all blue sc, 3 all white sc, 3 blue and white sc, ch 1, turn.
Rows 2 and 4: Sc in each sc, working colors as follows: 3 blue and white, 3 white, 3 blue, 3 blue and white, 3 white, 3 blue. Ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Sc in each sc as follows: 3 blue, 3 white, 3 blue and white, 3 blue, 3 white, 3 blue and white. Ch 1, turn.
Rows 5 and 7: Sc in each sc as follows: 3 white, 3 blue and white, 3 blue, 3 white, 3 blue and white, 3 blue. Ch 1, turn.
Rows 6 and 8: Sc in each sc as follows: 3 blue, 3 blue and white, 3 white , 3 blue, 3 blue and white, 3 white. Ch 1 , turn.
Rows 9 and 11: Sc in each sc as follows: 3 blue and white, 3 white, 3 blue, 3 blue and white, 3 white, 3 blue. Ch 1, turn.
Rows 10 and 12: Sc in each sc as follows: 3 blue, 3 white, 3 blue and white, 3 white, 3 blue and white.
Repeat rows 2 through 12 until piece measures 9 inches. Still working in pattern, decrease one st. on each side of every other row until there are 12 sts in row. Fasten off.
Palm Piece:
With 2 strands of blue, ch 13, turn.
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook (counts as 1 sc), sc in each ch across (12 sc). Ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Sc across, working 1 increase in first and last sts. Ch 1, turn.
Rows 3 - 7: Repeat rows 1 and 2.
Rows 8 to 25: Sc in each sc, ch 1, turn.
Row 26: SC across, working 1 decrease in first and last sts. Ch 1, turn.
Row 27: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.
Repeat rows 26 and 27 until 12 stitches remain in row. Fasten off.
Assembly: Fold palm piece in half. Mark center row of palm piece. With wrong sides held together and using two strands of blue yarn, slst one edge of palm piece to one body piece. Slst second half of palm piece to second body piece, beginning at center row. Slst each side of body piece together, then slst in each st around bottom opening, beginning at one edgfe. Ch 6, slst in next st for hanging loop. Cut yarn. With yarn needle, weave in loose ends of yarn.
