Crochet a Triangle-Shaped Granny Square Shawl

Wearable Crochet Project Using the Granny Square Stitch

Cyndee Kromminga
Turn your thermostat down or enjoy a cool summer evening outside with a cozy granny square shawl. The granny square stitch pattern creates the shape of the shawl while your choice of yarn colors produce the style. I chose to use a variety of coordinating yarn colors from my scrap yarn. The resulting style seemed very eclectic. This shawl could also be crocheted using one color for a more classic style.

Granny squares grow with each round. This shawl is half of a square crocheted on the diagonal to form a triangle. Instead of crocheting continuous rounds, the shawl is turned after each row along the diagonal. An extra cluster of stitches is made on each row, naturally causing the rows to increase in length.

This pattern can easily be accomplished by a beginning crocheter. The main stitches are the single and double crochet stitches.

Things You Will Need:

24 ounces, 4-ply, worsted weight yarn
Crochet hook, size H
Scissors

Chain three. Slip stitch in the first chain stitch to form a ring.

Row 1
Chain four. Crochet three double crochet stitches in the ring. This is the granny square cluster. The bottom of the cluster is the bottom point of the shawl. Chain one and double crochet once in the ring. This row has a total of one cluster. The extra double crochet on the end and the beginning chain four create spaces. Both will be considered turning chains, now and throughout the pattern.

Row 2
Chain four and turn. Crochet a cluster (three double crochet stitches) in the space of the turning chain. Chain one and crochet a cluster in the last turning chain. This row has a total of two clusters.

Row 3
Chain four and turn. Crochet a cluster in the first turning chain. Chain one and crochet a cluster in the the chain one space. End with a cluster in the last turning chain. This row has a total of three clusters.

Rows 4-63
Repeat row 3, crocheting a cluster in the turning chains and in each new chain one space of each row. The last row will have a total of 63 clusters. Do not cut the yarn.

Edging

Round 1
Chain one at the end of the last row. Single crochet three times in each of the turning chains around the edge of the shawl. Single crochet in each stitch along row 63.

Round 2
Do not turn. Chain three, skip one single crochet stitch and single crochet in the next stitch. Continue this pattern around the shawl. Slip stitch to the base of the beginning chain three, knot and cut the yarn. Weave in the yarn end.
