I have been making Recycled fabric rag rugs since I was in college in 1988. I actually didnt start selling them until 1992.
I originally started by purchasing fabric and had well over $200 into each rug (yeah I was a spend thrift college student).
I then started using sheets , clothing , curtains , table cloths anything that i could cut out stains or holes and use. I tear my fabric because as we all know fabric has a stress point so when i am tearing and pulling that place shows where to the naked eye it may not. All of the rugs I make i personally test to make sure they can be machine washed before I sell them. I do not work with wool or denim. Wool because I am alergic to it , and denim makes a poor quality rug it frays to much. Now my time is much greater than my investment. I purchase all of my fabric items at church sales , thrift stores , rumage sales , or from locals who know I will buy their kids clothes or yard sale leftovers.
Well enough about me onto the rugs.
These rag rugs crocheted are actually easier to care for that the braided rugs! WHY? crocheted rugs made with out a sewing machine rely on strength of fabric and your crochet stiches to hold themselves together. There are no threads to break , and they get softer as you wash them.
I especially like recycled fabric ones because you know how the fabric will look once it has been used. Sure a nice new starchy fabric looks nice at first but how will it look once the fabric is washed and worn? hard to say , hard to tell.
If I can get one person to switch to a recycled rag rug from this article that to purchase an imported throw rug that cant be washed I will be saving 20 pounds of fabric from going into a landfill. 10 from the disposable one you will buy and 10 from the one you buy or make for yourself(this is based on a 30 inch by 18 inch rug.
Support our earth , support recycling.
Even if they dont fit into your decor , donate your fabric or sell it to someone who makes them instead of throwing it in trash. 12 tshirts will make a great bathroom rug.
Do you know what I have left from a sheet i use? the tag and the elastic.
I have 2 st bernards and they love my rugs. My border collie recently passed away and from the day we got him in 1995 he loved a blue multi that is still in use. and it gets washed every week
