Crockpot Apple Ginger Crumble Dessert

Apple Dessert Takes Minutes to Fix, Smells Good All Day

Marie Anne St. Jean
This Apple Ginger Crumble is similar to an apple crisp in flavor, but the texture is more moist since it is cooked while covered in a crockpot. An apple dessert baked in the oven will usually be drier and more crisp. Because it cooks slowly, you'll need to prepare the crockpot version several hours in advance of serving, but the actual prep time is mere minutes.

Since it's so easy to make, you'll want to fix Crockpot Apple Ginger Crumble for your family often, especially in the cool months of fall. While quick to fix, you'll be tantalized by the aroma in your kitchen all day.

Crockpot Apple Ginger Crumble

Ingredients:

6 medium sized cooking apples (see note)
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
3/4 cup flour
1 cup oats (either regular or quick cooking)
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
5 tablespoons butter

Note: For this recipe, I like Fuji and Gala apples, but Winesap, Macintosh and the Delicious varieties are good too

Directions:

Peel, core and slice apples.
Butter the crockpot at the bottom and a few inches up the sides.
Place apples in the crockpot.
Combine sugar, flour, oatmeal and spices. Cut in butter with a pastry blender or butter knife.
Sprinkle mixture over the apples.
Cover and cook on low 4-5 hours.

Serve warm with good vanilla ice cream or real whipped cream (it deserves real vanilla bean or real cream - no cheap imitations).

You may substitute any of the sweet, aromatic spices such as cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice, or a combination thereof, but the ginger really does add a different flavor to this dessert. If you've never used ground ginger in an apple dessert before, give it a try this time and let me know how you liked it.

This sounds so yummy! I can't wait to try it. Someone who was moving just gave me a bag of apples, and I was looking for what to do with them when I found this.

I've put this on my bookmarks for later. I love crockpot dishes and you can't find many desserts for them.
