Crocus Cloth - What is it Used For?

Crocus cloth has industrial and in-home uses and can be purchased in sheets similar to sandpaper. It is an iron-oxide, non-abrasive cloth and has a flexible cloth backing.

Industrial Uses

Crocus cloth is used for smoothing metal surfaces and/or as polishing agent. Machinists use them on shafts and bushings. They are also used for polishing plastics and woods.

Home Uses

At home this product is great for getting rid of small burrs and rough spots on just about any hard surface around the house. It can also be helpful in removing stubborn stains and moisture related discoloration.

Restoration

Antiques refinishers and restoration shops use crocus cloth for cleaning hard to reach surfaces. It is also a favorite of jewelers.

Benefits

Crocus cloth is finer than regular sandpaper at 1200 grit or less, it is flexible and lasts much longer. It can be used wet or dry and also with 3-in-1 oil.

Drawbacks

Crocus cloth can get plugged up quickly when used on a lacquered or soft finish or painted surface.
