Crop Circles - Earth as Canvas

(from the Magical Mysteries Collection)

M. Night Shyamalan wrote and directed a movie in 2002 entitled, "Signs." To research his subject Shyamalan contacted Colin Andrews, a former electrical engineer with the British Government, who wrote a documentary about crop circle formations in 1991. Andrews was considered to be the world's leading authority on crop circles.

The year 1991 is significant because, while an average of 200 crop circles emerges every year, in 1991 the number rose dramatically with the appearance of over 700 circles.

These geometrically perfect designs, some of which appear with rings around them, often appear around what may be termed, "sacred sites." Even the most simple looking crop circle is intricately woven with highly complex patterns.

In the United States many crop circles have been located very close to Indian burial grounds. They also appear close to archaeological sites and underground water reservoirs. While they vary in size from one foot (rare) to 300 feet, the average diameter of a crop circle is 60 ft.

While the United States has recorded over 200 crop circles, the United Kingdom has had nearly 1800 crop formations. Interestingly 95% of all crop circle formations have appeared within a 40-mile range of Stonehenge in England. Stonehenge itself may have been erected over a crop circle.

Along with the United States and England, Canada, Germany, Australia, The Netherlands, Hungary, and approximately 43 other countries have recorded crop circle activity.

Questions about crop circle formation and cause range from wondering whether they were created by whirlwinds and flying saucers to imagining they were formed by natural atmospheric forces, including ionized air and the fluctuation of earth's magnetic field. Because of their beauty and perfection, some guess that crop circles are a form of artistic expression. But who or what would be expressing these geometric beauties and why?

Other theories include the Gaia theory, which emphasizes that Earth is a living breathing entity that is warning us to take better care of our planet. According to the Gaia theory, Earth used to be revered by its inhabitants. Now, because of global warming and the ozone layer, it is being abused by us.

Scientific observation of authentic crop circles concludes that the internal structure of plants at crop circle sites changes at the cellular level. Fake crop circles appear occasionally, but the process mentioned above cannot be replicated by human trampling on vegetation. In their attempt to copy crop circle formation, hoaxers destroy vegetation. Vegetation in fields with authentic crop circles not only continue to grow, but also sometimes grow better than they did before the circles appeared.

The beautifully perfect designs suggest the touch of a designer or creator. Sprinkled throughout the globe, crop circles appear to be symbolic messages that nobody has yet been able to decipher. Were they formed by malevolent beings who applaud our destruction of natural resources? Or are they created by benevolent beings who hope to inspire us to act on Earth's behalf?

Is the Earth crying out to us with symbolic teardrops that beg for our attention? What do the signs mean?

I think they're benevolent, but how or why they were created is an enticing mystery. Well put together, Theresa.

I wish I knew the origins of these works of art. I like the idea that earth herself is creating them as some kind of sacred geometric message to us.

hmmm - wonder how i would feel if i awoke to a crop circle next to the chook shed :-) reminds me tho only a little about some sankrit symbols. apparently if u have some fine sand, a pane of glass and a room with no drafts when you hum "oms" and other sacred sounds you get sankrit symbols. more food for thought ;-)
