Cross Body Bags: What to Look For and How to Wear Them

Carleen Phillips
Cross body bags? I admit when I first heard this name, the image of a human-length, black-zippered bag with crosses painted on it came to mind. Morbid, right? Turns out, I own a cross body bag and didn't even know what it was called. A cross body bag is a bag that usually has a single flap opening. The strap crosses your body. I'll chalk up my version to creative licensing.

The truth is, this design is probably the handiest bag you'll ever own. These bags vary in sizes from small enough to hold a checkbook (remember those?) to something you can stick your books in.

For everyday use, Fossil offers a great variety. You can purchase a fabric bag for $40, or you can go all out and strut your leather purchase for $140 and up. This brand has a style and color for everyone. It has an accessible center pouch, with up to three additional pouches on the outside. The more popular choice is the rustic leather look. It is very bohemian.

If you're looking for more fashion in your choice, try Nine West, or Sak. This leather feel is upscale and chic. You can expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $200 for one of these sleek-looking bags. Both are known for their silver accents or piped edging, and match any business attire.

LeSportsac is exactly what it sounds like. Fun. Very roomy and colorful, with fabric designs ranging from vibrant stripes and floral prints, to polka dots, geometric shapes, and drawings. Others are a single color and have a more solid feel. These bags average $40 each.

The brands listed above can be found in most department stores, such as Macy's. If you're in a tight budgeting crunch, you can find reasonably priced cross body bags at Target and Walmart.

Whatever your choice, make sure the bag is comfortable. Some people like their bag to hang below the hip, others wear it at hip level, some wear it just above. Check your budget, and make sure your choice reflects who you are.
