Cross Country Socks

A Travel Poem

Khara E. House
There's no explaining
why I find this remnant of you
absconded in my suitcase
except the possibility that I took you
with me intentionally a bit of you
to remember to hold close on nights
when warmth is an old pair of argyles
that gently glide their skins across
the tips of my fingers my forearms
and stretch themselves to the farthest
boroughs of my mind
that recall your scruff your softness your baritone.

I dig you out and roll you
into balls that roll across the carpet
bouncing off the walls dangling from the drawer
to do a shadow dance in the night
when I think I will never fall to sleep
if I cannot eradicate your face from my face
the stamp of you etched across my brow
my chin the laugh that escapes so suddenly
and interrupts the din of silence that secludes me
from your night and early morning.

There is truth in one thing
that I gladly took your handkerchief when you hand
it to me to wipe sweat from my brow
on an August afternoon before I left you
and hijacked your footwear across the prairie lands
you have not seen to a desert you envision
that does not exist to Ponderosa Pines and apple cider
nights in the early parts of October when I palm you
the only way I know how a self fulfilled
high five silenced by thick woven socks.

I was blown away by this. When I saw the title, I thought I'd be reading a product review so this was an extra pleasure, such wonderful use of language in this poem.
