Clean the Used Car Inside and Out
It's important to make the decision of buying your used car as easy on the buyer as possible. The car should be nice and clean, easing the buyer's mind that he/she is making the right decision by purchasing your used car. If the car is a mess, the buyer will be thinking, "Great, so here's a future mess I'm going to have to clean up." This tip is crucial to pay attention to no matter how cheap you are selling the used vehicle for. The difference between having a nicely presented used car for sale, as opposed to having something that looks like it's been sitting on the side of the road for a year while a homeless guy slept in it, is between being able to sell the car quickly or having to worry about finding a buyer.
Patch Up Any Flat Tires
This tip is not meant for you to be deceptive, you can tell the buyer that you used a can of "Fix a Flat" on the tire and it held up. This informs the buyer that the flat tire problem wasn't anything big and the tire is good to go. Patching up any flat tires allows the buyer to test drive the used car instead of having to fork over money and take your word that the car is in working condition.
Prepare the Paperwork
Get all of the paperwork straightened out before trying to sell the used car. This means taking care of the registration, smog and any liens you may have on the used vehicle. The initial appearance of the car can be flawless, the test drive can go excellent, but the last thing a buyer wants to invest in is a used car that he/she may never legally own.
Replace the Car Battery
Replacing a car battery can run you a fair amount of money, but it will save you time when selling the used car. A working used car leaves a much more positive impression on a buyer than the idea of buying a used car that might work. Even if the buyer is okay with personally replacing the battery, how is he/she going to know how the car drives, the condition of the engine and transmission, or if the electrical components work or not? A risk like this can drive down the price of the used car.
Change the Fluids
Clean fluids allow you to put your best foot forward by allowing the used car to run at its optimum level. With clean fluids, the gears shift smoother, the engine responds quicker, and you don't have to worry about any winding from the power steering. Clean fluids make the test drive of your used car the best it can be.
