Cruising at Its Best

If you are a fan of luxury cruising then take a look at what Silversea Cruises has to offer. This company is an Italian based company and has five small luxury ships one of which, the Prince Albert II, was launched in June 2008 to carry 132 passengers to exotic and remote locations such as the South Pacific.

Should you be looking for a cruise with no crowds, no expenses or tipping, no pressure and no confusing ship layouts then you may find that a Silversea cruise is right for you.

Let's take a look at a cruise on the Silver Whisper, which was launched in 2001. First of all there are only 388 cabins, which are all suites with 80% of them having a veranda. Should you book the Vernadah Suite you will have 345 sq ft of space which includes a walk in closet, drawer space, hanging space and shelf space plus there is an opaque curtain partition which can be used to separate the dining and living area.

Each suite has a queen- sized bed covered in linen with a high thread- count European cotton weave and a light down duvet. There will be a flat-screen TV offering scheduled movie choices plus you will have an attached DVD player and can borrow DVDs from the ship's library.

For those with laptops there is wireless internet in the cabin and for those who do not there are a number of computers in the library.

Each veranda has a teak deck that has two chairs and a table and solid iron walls to ensure your privacy.

The bathroom of each suite features granite marble and has a separate bath with flexible shower arm, two sinks, make-up mirror, bags of shelf space and thick soft cotton towels. Total luxury.

Now we know what can be expected lets take a look at check-in procedures. Well, here on the Silver Whisper check-in is extremely civilized and takes place in the Viennese Lounge. During check-in you will be offered champagne and hors d'oeuvres by a crew of doting staff. Your luggage will be transported to your cabins by more doting staff, you won't even need to touch it.

Once safely ensconced in your cabin you will receive a visit from your cabin steward who will want to know if you would prefer Acqua di Palma, Bvlgari or Neutrogena bath amenities for the trip.

Each guest gets to toast the cruise with a bottle of Pommery, iced and ready with flutes set next to a vase of fresh orchids, which remain so throughout the trip. All thirsts can be satisfied with the complimentary selection of beverages that are in the mini-fridge or in any of the lounges. Most items alcoholic or otherwise are included in the tariff.

Now onto a very important part of any cruise, dining. The standard venue for dining is the Restaurant where you can dine at anytime you wish. Mostly dress is casual but there are usually two formal nights where people put on their best bibs and tuckers. Service is white-gloved and the food ranges from king crab timbale to chateaubriand to snails drenched in a saucy garlic and wine. To compliment your meal there are Spanish, Italian and French wines which are poured freely by the hovering service.

You can also dine at La Terrazza which offers the option to sit outside and the menu is more exclusive.

For recreation the Silver Whisper offers a wide assortment of entertainment ranging from Broadway show tunes and classical piano performance to first-run films and geo-history seminars. On the days that you are at sea there are also wellness and beauty seminars offered at the spa, cooking lessons and golf lessons just to mention a few of the extras offered.

Shore excursions can be booked at the shore excursion desk. Any transfers from ship to land are handle by Silverseas plus they usually offer regular transport throughout the day to the city centers making it unnecessary for the guests to dig out their euros or deal with taxi drivers.

A Silversea cruise is ideal for honeymooners, couples or multi generational family groups but is not advisable for families with young children. This type of cruise is a small ship experience that is focused on the comfort of the cruise itself.
