Cry Little Sister New Blood Swamp Version for True Blood

G Tom Mac (Gerard McMann or go forward Gerard McMahon), the English songwriter, instrumentalist and music producer who recorded the creepy yet alluring song, Cry Little Sister, which was recorded in 1987 and used in the 1987 cult classic vampire film, The Lost Boys, has remade the song for the currently popular HBO series, True Blood. The Lost Boys soundtrack album peaked at number 15 on the Billboard but the later release as a single did not chart in the U.S.

This True Blood version is called the Blood Swamp version. McMann tries to put the Cajun soul of Louisiana into this remake. HBO released a video, directed by Anthony Cappello, of this song starring McMann himself on YouTube.

The chorus replaces the children chanting with that of a black woman with a very bluesy, soulful voice. A tambourine has been added to the background music. McMann seems pretty much like it did in the original but with his own attempt at a blues sound, which seems to come and go throughout the song.

The music video cast includes McMann and images from True Blood with Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer and Sam Trammell. A fun addition to the video is the bayou background and a bottle of True Blood as a slide on the guitar.

Overall, I think this is a fun version of the song but not the greatest version. McMann's voice is almost as good as it was 22 years ago but I think it lost a little bit. I do not think that the song blends in perfectly with a blues sound; it seems to fluctuate between blending well and clashing. It loses a lot of its creepy sound with this version.

This song is available on iTunes. The video may be viewed on YouTube HERE.
