Smoke trickles from our lips,
singin' along to classic rock,
thinkin' of a time when it was
still young-
when we would stand.
when we would fight.
when the world was ripe
for changin'.
There were no sleepy lullabies
in 1976.

There were no sleepy lullabies
in 1976.
Now all we sing about is broken hearts,
or clubs or hoes or expensive cars.
We'll purchase our freedom
at shopping malls-
all on credit, due to
Ohio.
We'll sling our books on
unbroken backs,
staggering smoothly through life,
looking at the floor.
There will not be peace when
we are done.
Yet still we cry no more.
