Crying Infants Hidden in Day Care Storage Room in Tennessee
Inspector Finds Children Hidden in Room that is a Potential Fire Hazard
An inspector visiting Paulette's Group Day Care Home last Friday found that there was only one worker caring for eight children. State law requires at least two workers for eight children.
The inspector heard crying and discovered three children under the age of 2 had been hidden in a storage room. The worker had placed the infants in playpens with blankets pinned over the tops. The room was stacked to the ceiling with boxes and electrical boxes and hot water heaters were also present in the room. A sign that said, "Private Day Care does not go beyond this point" had been placed on the door. It is believed that the children were hidden in an attempt to cover up the fact that there was only one worker caring for eight children.
An investigation by the Tennessee Department of Children's Services will determine if there was any child abuse or neglect at the day care center.
This is not the first infraction by this day care center. Last June, ten children at the day care were infected with E. coli and four were sent to the hospital. The E. coli infection did not originate with the day care, but the facility was cited for leaving children outside unattended, failing to keep correct attendance records and exceeding its licensed capacity.
Ms. Colter was on vacation when the inspection occurred and has had no comment.
The day care has been licensed since 1988 with a three star rating- the state's highest rating- and is inspected a minimum of five times a year.

Not only is it really bad how our youth is treated, but also look at how the rates are so expensive. Some single mothers have to carry two jobs just to foot the bill for the babysitters! Now how she going to pay the bills??
Probably more infractions at this daycare and they let it stay open. Makes me so angry in not only daycares, but in homes when neglect is obvious they just let it be, or give them another chance. It is awful that it takes major abuse and even death to get someones attention.
These things upset me so!
Great reporting.. And if my child had been one of them, you would be writing an article on me..:-)
That is so horrible. Makes you think twice about where to take your kids! :)
Very enlightening. I hope many parents' eyes are opened, and that they trust those "funny feelings" they may have regarding their child care arrangement. That feeling is usually for a valid reason -- to warn parents to dig a bit deeper.
Great article! What a terrible situation. I expect that this isn't the first time babies have been hidden in that closet since the space had been set up with playpens. This was planned and not spur of the moment. Thanks for this it makes me feel better about being a work at home mom because even though it is hard to work while taking care of kids its so worth it to keep them out of a place like that.
That's horrible. It's really sad how badly some people treat our youth. These people should spend a couple weeks in a dark jail cell.
Gee, it puts into perspective what a 3-star rating from the state is worth.
