Crying Over Unemployed Milk Carton

Spoiled Rotten

Heather Dekin

Melancholy eyes full of curdled malaise
Spoiling in the refrigerator
Making it smell like rotten cottage cheese
Every time the door opens and shuts
Nauseated by the idea of failure
Represented by that stinky container
Searching for an item to claim
Safe passage from the world's pressures
Personal sins plaguing thoughts
Waking up every night soaked in sweat
An oily mix of natural body scent and nerves
Smelling of Tequila and strong sea salt
Defeated by a night of heavy drinking
Erasing the past few weeks with each shot
Depression coincides with random table dancing
Occasionally removing an article of clothing
Shocking random passerbys when a bra lands on them
Embarrassment a thing of the past
An illusion of disenchanting romantic entanglements
Thrown in with a dash of carnal apples
A smashing good time concluding with a loud bang
Of a jackhammer hangover
Head flushed down the drain
Body caught in the Bermuda Triangle
Fate unbeknownst to family, friends and casual acquaintances
No sign of life or personal freedom along the horizon
Just a lack of assurance about what happens tomorrow
Obsessing over solving the mysteries of today
Purchasing a worn out Private Investigator license
Minus the dark brown fedora and the matching attitude
Time to begin looking into a future without stability
Let's see how starvation and losing six inches off your waist
Works in the interim and call it the unemployment diet
Losing weight due to lack of dining funds
Or the ability to pay bills sufficiently and on time
Playing hide & seek with the bill collectors
A fun way to spend the next who knows when
Until the cops shut the prison cell doors
Giving three square meals and an hour of yard time
Better than unemployment and bill dodging
At least there's some predictability involved
That's all that matters in the end
A moment of calmness in the midst of all the chaos
Hopefully that'll last longer than a millisecond
Let's hope
Otherwise the chaos continues
