Crystal Bowersox Almost Quits American Idol - Did She Have Good Reasons?

Brandon Miller
Crystal Bowersox has been a personal favorite of mine since she made it past her first audition for American Idol season 9. I wasn't at all surprised to see that she continued to wow the judges week after week. In fact, she hasn't hardly gotten a single negative comment all season from any of the judges - even from Simon Cowell.

Because of her seemingly flawless American Idol record so far, I was surprised to see TMZ reporting that Crystal had walked out of the competition. According to the report, Bowersox walked off the show several weeks ago planning to head back to her home in Ohio. Host Ryan Seacrest followed Crystal into the parking lot to talk her into coming back. Bowersox reportedly told Ryan that she was tired of the attention and really missed her family. This may have some to do with it, but was Crystal Bowersox have good reasons for leaving?

Crystal Bowersox says She Couldn't Handle the Competition

I'm not exactly sure what she meant by this, but I do understand how demanding the American Idol competition probably is. First, competitors only have a week to select, customize, and practice their performance. This is extremely demanding, especially since most music artist spend months working on songs for an album. Also, the competitors must perform flawlessly on the American Idol stage. This is one reason why I have so much respect for American Idol contestants. Why? Because most professional artist perform great in a recording studio.... they sound great and get to have a pro DJ fine tune the end result. Unfortunately, many of them then go on to give sub-par live performances. American Idol contestants don't have that luxury. They must sound good from the get go.

Bowersox Misses her Family

This is understandable, especially since she has a small child. But, come on - she has already come so far. Would it really be worth it to throw away everything that she has accomplished and the future financial stability of here family over a few more weeks away from home? Personally, I think she is probably feeling homesick more than the other competitors because she is pretty confident that she is in it for the long haul (due to her success so far).

Crystal Bowersox tells Ryan Seacrest that She is Tired of the Attention

Sure, I can understand that. I have been in her shoes. Ok, I'm lying, but I did grow up in a small town in Ohio just like her. Two years ago, my wife and I moved from our small hometown of 24,000 people to a much larger city just outside of Los Angeles. At first the change in culture was a bit overwhelming. However, I couldn't imagine what Crystal is going through with thousands of screaming fans, paparazzi, and cameras in her face all day long on top of that.

I am glad that Bowersox decided to stay on American Idol. I think she definitely has the stuff it takes to win. Best of luck to Crystal this week! I'll be routing for you!

I don't think most people who try out for Idol think about what their life will be like if they win, beyond the money. I wouldn't want to be away from my family or have the paparazzi poking into my personal life! (My niece wants me to try out...)
